Identity & Access Management (IAM) Improvement Project
Identity & Access Management (IAM) at Trinity College
The college is working to improve how we manage digital identities and access to systems and data. This effort is part of an Identity and Access Management (IAM) program, which will help ensure that the right people have the necessary access to the correct systems at the appropriate time. The Identity and Access Management (IAM) project is a multi-year initiative designed to enhance and modernize Trinity’s IAM infrastructure. The main goals include:
- Provide greater flexibility for administrative and business processes, including security/access management and communications.
- Reduce onboarding and account administration challenges.
- Increase personal agency around identity data and updates.
- Design a sustainable solution.
Discovery Work
We are currently evaluating and implementing solutions to replace outdated or nonexistent technologies for our provisioning, registry, and entitlement management processes.
- Provisioning: Automating the process of creating, modifying, and deactivating user accounts and access rights.
- Registry: Maintaining a centralized and accurate record of all identities within the organization.
- Entitlement Management: Ensuring users have appropriate access to resources based on their roles and affiliations.
What is IAM?
Identity and Access Management (IAM) is a method for controlling who can access what across the college’s technology systems. It helps answer questions like:
- Who has access to what?
- Is the access appropriate for their role?
- Is access tracked and managed securely?
IAM touches many parts of campus, including Human Resources, Finance, Information Technology Services (ITS), and others. It plays a key role in supporting privacy, security, and compliance with regulations.
Why This Matters
IAM helps protect sensitive information and supports how we work every day. A strong IAM system makes it easier to:
- Secure data and systems
- Onboard and offboard employees, students, and partners efficiently
- Meet regulatory requirements like FERPA and GLBA
- Enable new and improved services for the campus community
What’s Changing
We are modernizing our IAM systems to:
- Improve security
- Streamline processes like login, role-based access, and approvals
- Reduce manual steps and errors
- Support faster setup when people join or change roles at the college
What to Expect
As we implement these changes, you may notice slight adjustments in how you log in or request access to specific systems. While we work to make this process as smooth as possible, we appreciate your patience and support.
Key Risks the IAM Project Addresses
- Preventing unauthorized access or data loss
- Reducing security and compliance gaps
- Supporting strategic IT needs and services
- Eliminating manual, inefficient processes
IAM is a complex topic with technical components, but at its heart, it’s about enabling people to do their jobs securely and efficiently. This project is a long-term investment in the college’s digital future.
