The Hartford Business Journal's first ranking of the region’s most powerful figures includes Trinity College President Joanne Berger-Sweeney and two prominent Trinity alumni: House Minority Leader Themis Klarides ’87 and Paul Mounds ’07, the chief of staff to Gov. Ned Lamont.

Alumni from the Class of 2019 are achieving their post-graduation goals of employment, graduate studies, military or volunteer service, and other fulfilling pursuits. In a testament to the value of a liberal arts education today, recent data gathered from 87 percent of the members of the Class of 2019 showed a 97-percent positive outcome rate.

“I can’t wait for in-person classes to resume, but remote learning is obviously better than canceling classes, so I want to give my students everything I can to allow their education to continue,” says Assistant Professor of Engineering Clayton Byers. Here, Byers recounts a recent day and reflects on the experiences of conducting a review session, advising, and teaching remotely.

Being separated physically has not kept the Trinity College community from connecting this semester. While the COVID-19 pandemic prevents large gatherings in spaces like the Washington Room, Vernon Social, or the Chapel, groups across campus are getting creative by moving events and activities online and inviting people to attend from wherever they are.

Students in Trinity’s undergraduate Public Policy and Law and graduate Public Policy programs have a unique opportunity this semester to study what one professor calls a “real-life civics lesson,” as states and the federal government grapple with how to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trinity College Associate Professor of Language and Culture Studies Kifah Hanna has been awarded a Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowship for Recently Tenured Scholars from the American Council of Learned Societies. The prestigious fellowship will be hosted at Columbia University’s Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies during the 2020-2021 academic year.

From an estimated pool of more than 5,000 applicants from across the country, Trinity College students Claire Grigglestone ’21, Alisa Levin ’21, and Anika Harkins ’21 have been selected to receive the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, a prestigious award for students who wish to pursue careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering.

When the spring semester began, students in the “Anthropology and Global Health” course at Trinity College had no idea just how timely their class discussions would become. While the COVID-19 pandemic and its public health response unfold around the globe, James A. Trostle, Scott M. Johnson ’97 Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, helps students understand public health problems and the organizations that exist to address them.

Student and faculty volunteers from Trinity College provided hands-on workshops involving science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for more than 80 sixth- through ninth-grade girls who came to Trinity’s campus to participate in the AAUW of Connecticut’s seventh annual Tech Savvy conference.

As the world adjusts to changing realities and uncertainty brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, Trinity College students are stepping up with financial support and other resources to help one another. The Student Government Association has collected money from student groups that would have been spent on spring events and has launched a crowdsourced network of support for their peers.
