Trinity Theater & the Coed Revolution, Curated by Sydney Yu, ’25

This past year, recent graduate Sydney Yu researched the impact of coeducation at Trinity on the theater department in the 1970s.

“Prior to coeducation, most productions at Trinity featured mainly male casts, both due to the then-available student population and the choice of canonized works of the Western tradition for performance. As Trinity College transitioned into a coeducational institution beginning in 1969, Trinity’s theater productions, which had predominantly featured male-centric narratives, gradually embraced more inclusive casting and storytelling. The introduction of plays with more female roles marked a transformative period in the college’s artistic expression, echoing the broader societal push for gender equality.” — Sydney Yu, Trinity Class of 2025
