Library support for Open Access Publishing

Open Access publishing and subscription agreements from the Library 

Trinity College Library has opted in to special arrangements that bundle journal access subscription costs with free Open Access publishing for Trinity faculty. These arrangements, often called “read & publish,” mean that Trinity’s scholarly work can be made available as Open Access without having to pay APCs (author processing charges). Read & publish programs are not yet available for all journals or publishers, but we currently have them available for the following: 

  • ACM OPEN
    As of summer 2023, Trinity College participates in ACM OPEN program.  When Trinity faculty publish in the journal, their work will be made Open Access without paying an extra APC. Additionally, we have paid access to back issues of the journal, but See ACM’s website for more information.
     
  • ACS-Sponsored Open Access
    Faculty who are affiliated with undergraduate institutions that subscribe to ACS publications can publish their work as Open Access without paying any fees. See their website for more information.
  • Cambridge University Press journals
    As of Spring 2023, Trinity College participates in Cambridge’s Read & Publish agreement, which allows Trinity authors to waive the Open Access fee when publishing in CUP hybrid or gold journals. For more information, see their website.  

  

Other Open Access Publishing Projects Supported by Trinity

Part of building a sustainable and equitable publishing model involves eliminating barriers to entry into the scholarly publishing sphere. One of the largest barriers is the “author pays” system, which requires authors to pay fees, or APCs (author processing charges), to publish their work as OA. APCs are especially burdensome for authors who lack institutional support, or whose institutions lack financial means.  

Many libraries and foundations are working toward alternative OA publishing models by providing upfront funding for Open Access publishing costs. The following programs do not provide direct benefits to Trinity authors, but our participation means we are joining our peers in creating a more equitable scholarly publishing system. 

  • Annual Reviews S2O
    Trinity contributes to Annual Reviews Subscribe to Open program, in which our regular subscription costs are used to “unlock” journals for Open Access. More information.
     
  • Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
    Part of the global Open Access infrastructure, DOAJ is an index of Open Access journals whose vision is to “build an equitable and diverse scholarly ecosystem where trusted research can be accessed globally without barriers.” Trinity is a supporting member of DOAJ.
