Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Changes: Preparing for Microsoft’s SMS and Voice Retirement
Microsoft Is Retiring SMS and Voice Authentication
To improve account security and reduce the risk of phishing attacks, Microsoft is retiring SMS text message and voice call authentication for Microsoft Entra ID beginning February 1, 2027. Microsoft is moving organizations toward stronger, phishing-resistant authentication methods such as Passkeys and Microsoft Authenticator.
In preparation for this change, Trinity College will begin transitioning users away from SMS text message and voice call authentication methods during the 2026-2027 academic year.
What You Need to Know
- SMS text messages and voice calls will no longer be supported by Microsoft after February 1, 2027.
- Users currently relying on these methods will need to register an alternative authentication method.
- Microsoft will begin prompting affected users to enroll Passkeys during sign-in starting September 2026.
- You do not need to wait for Microsoft’s prompts and can switch today.
Recommended Authentication Methods
- Passkeys (recommended)
- Microsoft Authenticator
- FIDO2 Security Keys (such as YubiKeys)
- Other supported one-time password (OTP) applications
Microsoft is retiring SMS and voice authentication because these methods are more susceptible to phishing, social engineering, and account takeover attacks. Trinity’s long-term direction aligns with Microsoft’s move toward passwordless and phishing-resistant authentication.
