Dear Trinity Community Members,

What is at the heart of community? In 2017, when we wrote Summit, Trinity College’s strategic plan, we set a goal to “foster an inclusive campus community that embraces diversity and complexity, engages across differences with integrity and empathy, and participates actively in the life and governance of the College.” We hold steadfast to this commitment and will continue to act upon it so that we evolve as a community where everyone—students, faculty, and staff—can feel they belong and contribute to the mission of the College.

In this spirit, on behalf of the Task Force on Campus Climate, we present to you Trinity’s Action Plan for Racial Justice, which represents an effort across the institution to identify, organize, and categorize actions that we have taken or plan to implement to support a more inclusive community. The creation of the task force in fall 2020 followed a summer in which our nation, the world, and our campus experienced a reckoning regarding matters of racial and social justice. These events, including what we heard from the Umoja Coalition and various alumni groups, were catalysts for the task force and this plan. Now, we not only commit to making space for ongoing institutional reflection and collective action but also want to recognize the work that has been done and the progress already made.

Please join members of the task force for a town hall to discuss this plan on Thursday, April 6, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in the Washington Room of Mather Hall. Lunch will be served. Kindly RSVP here.

While the work of the task force will continue to evolve, we wish to take a moment to thank the members for their efforts and to present this plan to our community with pride and hope. An executive summary also is available. We hope to see you at the town hall.

Sincerely,

Joanne Berger-Sweeney
