Dear Trinity College Community Members,

Eight months ago, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in two cases—one involving Harvard University and the other involving the University of North Carolina—that challenged the consideration of race in college admissions. Today the Court has banned such use of affirmative action in college .

This is a disappointing decision for all who deeply believe that a diverse student body benefits the educational and lived experience at Trinity and, more broadly, society. Our commitment to educating a student body from different backgrounds promotes intellectual diversity and cross-cultural understanding in ways that enrich our community and deepen learning. When we enroll and support highly qualified and talented students from diverse backgrounds, they learn from one another and grow as bold, independent thinkers who become prepared to engage the greater world around us. Though it may take time to understand the full implications of the ruling, we, as always, will continue to proceed in a manner that is consistent with the law.

This decision does not change our core values. As we move forward, we will continue to focus on supporting a diverse community, welcoming students from all backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and delivering a world-class education, as we have done for 200 years.

Sincerely,

Joanne Berger-Sweeney
President and Trinity College Professor of Neuroscience
