Please Welcome Trinity College’s New General Counsel

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dickens “Deke” Mathieu as Trinity’s General Counsel.

Deke is a seasoned senior-level attorney who brings to Trinity a wealth of experience in higher education, private law firm practice, and public service. This appointment is particularly important to Trinity at this time to help the College meet, with a high level of competence, the increasing number of laws and regulations affecting higher education.  Deke has substantial experience advising clients in the myriad issues related to personnel, faculty affairs, student affairs, and compliance that our College faces.

Deke comes to us from Mathieu Consulting, LLC, a higher education consulting firm he founded to help clients navigate an increasingly complex and resource-intensive legal and regulatory environment.

Prior to his consulting work, Deke served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Syracuse University. Before that position, he was Senior Legal Counsel at Tufts University, where I had the pleasure of working with him. Before practicing higher education law, Deke prosecuted narcotics trafficking as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Boston, Massachusetts. He began his legal career in 1993 at the law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, LLP, in Washington, D.C.

Deke earned a B.A. in political science from Amherst College and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. He is active in the National Association of College and University Attorneys; is a founding director of Discovering Justice, The James D. St. Clair Court Education Project; and is a life member and former director of the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association.

We look forward to welcoming Deke to Trinity on February 1.
