Students in Trinity’s undergraduate Public Policy and Law and graduate Public Policy programs have a unique opportunity this semester to study what one professor calls a “real-life civics lesson,” as states and the federal government grapple with how to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trinity College Associate Professor of Language and Culture Studies Kifah Hanna has been awarded a Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowship for Recently Tenured Scholars from the American Council of Learned Societies. The prestigious fellowship will be hosted at Columbia University’s Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies during the 2020-2021 academic year.

From an estimated pool of more than 5,000 applicants from across the country, Trinity College students Claire Grigglestone ’21, Alisa Levin ’21, and Anika Harkins ’21 have been selected to receive the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, a prestigious award for students who wish to pursue careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering.

When the spring semester began, students in the “Anthropology and Global Health” course at Trinity College had no idea just how timely their class discussions would become. While the COVID-19 pandemic and its public health response unfold around the globe, James A. Trostle, Scott M. Johnson ’97 Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, helps students understand public health problems and the organizations that exist to address them.

Student and faculty volunteers from Trinity College provided hands-on workshops involving science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for more than 80 sixth- through ninth-grade girls who came to Trinity’s campus to participate in the AAUW of Connecticut’s seventh annual Tech Savvy conference.

As the world adjusts to changing realities and uncertainty brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, Trinity College students are stepping up with financial support and other resources to help one another. The Student Government Association has collected money from student groups that would have been spent on spring events and has launched a crowdsourced network of support for their peers.

To help ease the transition to living and studying on an American campus, a pilot program introduced in fall 2019 in Trinity’s Allan K. Smith Center for Writing and Rhetoric connects first-year international students with mentors who provide academic and social support.

Tom Fusciello, Trinity College assistant vice president of construction, facilities, and operations, has been selected for the 2020-21 National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) Fellows Program.

Trinity College has opened the 13,000-square-foot Trinity Innovation Center in downtown Hartford as a space for boundary-crossing collaborations and creativity. Located on the third floor of One Constitution Plaza, the new center will house Trinity’s partnership with Infosys; the Digital Health CT accelerator; and new innovation and entrepreneurship programming for students.

Led by a group of Trinity College students, staff, and faculty members, a new initiative called TrinVotes! is designed to increase the college’s voter registration and election participation, especially among students who are first-time voters.
