Passion for the Public Good

Students lead efforts to get out the vote. Heading into the hotly contested 2020 presidential election, first-year students enrolled in Trinity’s Community Action Gateway Program partnered with Hartford groups to increase voter engagement in the city while learning about issues relating to social change.

Trinity’s student-led chapter of the public interest advocacy group ConnPIRG called more than 600 Trinity students in the week before Election Day as part of its New Voters Project. In addition, the college designed the TrinVotes! initiative to increase student voter registration and election participation, especially among first-time voters. A group of students, staff, and faculty members led TrinVotes! in its mission of helping prepare students be engaged citizens who know how to register, to stay informed about the issues and candidates, and to vote in person or via absentee ballot. Organized efforts such as these helped power a high voter turnout in Connecticut and nationwide. Read more about TrinVotes!
