Dear Faculty and Staff,

In my first month at Trinity, I enjoyed meeting many of you and hearing how each of you contributes to fulfilling our mission. As I mentioned in my last correspondence, I am doing all that I can to accelerate my understanding of Trinity’s key strengths and opportunities for improvement so that together we can make wise and strategic decisions about our future.

As I begin my tenure as president, one of my highest priorities is to define—and to ensure—a highly effective approach to our College’s administrative leadership. With an eye toward our continued progress, I write to share several strategic organizational updates.

Colleges and universities nationwide are intensifying efforts to compete for the best and brightest students. Coupled with the decline (or demographic shift) in the number of traditional-age college students, we need to be more effective than ever before in presenting Trinity’s areas of strength. The work of student recruitment, enrollment, and financial aid is increasingly complex with potentially profound effects for our market position and financial stability.

This is a moment that calls for heightened attention, focus, and accountability. I believe we can best meet this moment by having Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Matt Hyde report directly to me. I will work closely with Matt and others to evaluate and strengthen our enrollment strategies while Matt and his team continue to be active partners with our student success colleagues to create a coherent experience for our students from recruitment through graduation.

This also is a time that requires strong collaboration across divisions of the College. I look forward to working closely with two administrative leadership groups to strengthen our effectiveness in supporting our students, faculty, and staff. The first is the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), composed of colleagues who are responsible for the major divisions or core functions of the College. In alphabetical order, those on our Executive Leadership Team will be:

Ben Anderson, vice president for advancement; David Andres ’04, associate vice president and chief data and analytics officer; Sonia Cardenas, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty; Anita Davis, vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion; Joseph DiChristina, vice president for student success and enrollment management; Kristen Eshleman, vice president for library and information technology services; Hellen Hom-Diamond, vice president for strategic marketing and communications; Matthew Hyde, dean of admissions and financial aid; Scott Jordan, vice president and chief financial officer; Dickens Mathieu, general counsel and secretary of the College; Jason Rojas M’12, chief of staff and associate vice president for external affairs; and Gavin Viano, director of athletics and recreation.

The ELT will have fiduciary accountability to our Board of Trustees and will serve as staff liaisons to committees of the Board of Trustees.

I also will rely on the advice and expertise of an Administrative Leadership Team (ALT) that will include colleagues who report to members of the Executive Leadership Team and are senior leaders within their divisions. The ALT will be charged with interdivisional collaboration, change management, and campuswide project management. The ALT will give a broader group of campus leaders direct and regular access to me and to one another to create and nurture a more collaborative organizational culture at Trinity.

The ALT will meet with me monthly and consult with other leaders on campus depending on the topic. In alphabetical order, those on our ALT will be:

Anthony Berry (director of admissions); Christina Bleyer (College librarian, associate vice president of libraries and digital learning/director of special collections and archives, Watkinson Library); Beth Cahill (associate vice president for advancement); Stephanie Cox (associate vice president and chief technology officer); Caroline Deveau (assistant vice president for communications); Kate Durante (assistant vice president for human resources); Maria del Carmen Flores (associate vice president for student life); Tom Fusciello (assistant vice president for construction, facilities, and operations); Marcia Johnson (assistant vice president for budget); Kristen Noone (deputy athletic director); Sarah Raskin, associate dean for faculty development; Jason Rojas M’12, chief of staff and associate vice president for external affairs); Pamela Whitley (assistant vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion and compliance); and Hilary Wyss (associate dean for curriculum).

I could not be more excited about joining the Trinity community and embracing the opportunities that lie ahead for our College, our students, and all of us. Our purpose is to offer an exceptional liberal arts education and experience that will inspire each generation in our care. Our administrative leadership will be effective if it serves that end.

Sincerely,

Dan
