Reporting Safety and/or Health Issues or Concerns: Do’s and Don’ts

Do Don’t
  • Be sure to report safety and health-related issues and concerns immediately or as quickly as possible (especially if someone could become seriously injured or ill).
  • Encourage others to report safety and health-related issues.
  • Take measures to minimize and/or alert others of the hazard (if safe to do so) until help arrives.
  • Provide as many details as possible when making a report.
  • Very clearly indicate whether or not you believe the issue to be urgent (potential immediate risk for serious injury or illness)
  • Wait to report safety and health issues; the sooner it is reported, the sooner we can work to make sure nobody gets hurt or becomes ill.
  • Assume that someone else will report the issue.
  • Be afraid to report an issue as urgent or emergency if you believe it to be.
  • Put yourself in harm’s way—if there is an imminent risk, get to a safe place and report the issue as an emergency.
  • Put others in harm’s way – Take reasonable measures to minimize and/or alert others of the hazard (if safe to do so) until help arrives.
