AUCCCD Statement on Recent Anti-LGBTQIA+ Legislation
Over the past year, several states have passed legislation that does harm to the LGBTQIA+ community, and particularly trans folx. These include laws restricting access to gender affirming health care for youth, laws that prohibit trans individuals from using bathrooms that match their gender identity, laws that prohibit education about sexual orientation and gender identity, and laws that vilify drag performers as dangerous to children. Not only do these laws discriminate against LGBTQIA+ individuals, they also serve to reinforce and promote negative stereotypes and prejudice towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Research has shown that LGBTQIA+ youth are at increased risk for depression and suicide, and that non-inclusive and hostile environments only increase this risk. We therefore strongly condemn these anti-LGBTQIA+ legislative efforts and encourage state representatives and governors to do better in ensuring the health and safety of all young people, including members of our most vulnerable populations.
