Fall 2023

In Fall 2023, Prof. Dugan brought her LATN – 203 Latin in Roman Daily Life, students to the Ancient Burying Ground in downtown Hartford to examine Latin inscriptions and iconography on the gravestones. The Ancient Burying Ground dates back to the 1640s and is a phenomenal resource on the history and people of Hartford, Connecticut.

Examples of Latin in the cemetery include the phrases Momento Mori (“Remember [that you] Die”) and Anno Domi (abbreviation of Anno Domini (A.D.) “in the year of [our] Lord).

In October 2023 Students from LATN – 203 Latin in Roman Daily Life,  to see our very own 1487 edition of the Latin text Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of Witches) in the Watkinson for their Witching Hour event on Halloween! This book was used to justify targeting women and witches and it’s amazing we have an original copy.
