David Smith earned his B.S. degree in engineering from Trinity College in 1987. He began his career at General Dynamics, Electric Boat Division, in Groton, CT where he was a design engineer for the four fluid systems which support the missile compartment of the Trident nuclear submarine. He went on to earn his Masters in Business Administration at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.  While in Ann Arbor, he volunteered as the business manager for the school’s solar car team which won the inaugural solar car race from Florida to Michigan.  Michigan’s interdisciplinary approach of teaming the School of Engineering with the School of Business was noted by Business Week and the New York Times as one of the reasons for the University’s success in the race.

Upon graduation, he joined IBM where he has spent most of his career on the services side of the business specializing in working with clients to transform their information technology operations through outsourcing.  He is currently a Vice President for Strategic Outsourcing.
