Dear Trinity Community,

As we begin the new academic year, campus safety has been a priority in our planning. Specifically, throughout the spring and summer, Trinity College has been in conversations with officials from the City of Hartford and Hartford Police Department regarding pedestrian safety. After the tragic death of Jillian Hegarty ’24 last spring, it has been a priority for us to work with the City Engineer and the Traffic Operations Engineer to plan and implement traffic-calming measures on streets adjacent to campus.

The following measures have been implemented to improve traffic safety:

  • Traffic delineators (highly visible posts which slow and guide traffic to benefit pedestrian safety) have been installed on New Britain Avenue at Henry Street and Crescent Street.
  • New stop signs with flashing red beacons have been installed at two locations on Summit Street.
  • Pedestrian crosswalks have been repainted and new signage installed on New Britain Avenue.
  • Speed bumps have been installed on Allen Place and Summit Street.

Thank you to the many community members who reached out with concerns and ideas since the spring. We believe these measures will greatly assist with pedestrian safety and benefit our campus community as well as the City of Hartford. It’s also important to remember that we, as members of our college community and as residents of Hartford, can personally contribute to improving safety by always obeying traffic laws and driving at lower rates of speed. We are grateful to the City of Hartford for their response and the excellent work of their staff to have these improvements in place prior to the start of the new academic year.

On behalf of everyone in Campus Safety, we wish you a successful and healthy academic year.

Sincerely,

Rob Lukaskiewicz
