Capstone Projects
As part of the GHHG curriculum, our students complete a capstone project. Some students complete their capstone by studying health abroad. So far, our students have studied in Argentina, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Netherlands, South Africa, and Spain.
Other students do a community-based project here in Hartford. Here are a few examples:
Sarai Davis partnered with COMPASS Youth Collaborative, an organization that seeks to interrupt violence in Hartford by supporting and advocating for mental health. Sarai worked to develop strategies to engage with the community, including neighborhood cleanups and trauma recovery support.
Rachel Fearon created an optometry app for Hartford residents. Her app is a one-stop shop for accessible descriptions of eye health conditions, information about local optometrists, and resources to help underprivileged residents afford the eye care they need.
Maria Mathew was inspired by her Stroke Navigator Internship at Hartford Hospital. She learned firsthand that patients’ race, income, and language impacted their care. She created an informational pamphlet to educate residents about the risk factors, signs, and resources for treating strokes.
Ella Schaffer conducted a research project exploring social perceptions surrounding chronic illness. Working with International Children’s Advisory Network Youth Council, Ella and her team conducted over two hundred surveys, yielding important insights about social bias and stigma toward chronic illness.
