Why did you choose to Major in English Literature?

I chose to major in English Literature because I just loved reading.  I loved that books transported me to different countries, periods, worlds; allowed me to immerse myself in different lives and different points of view.  And ultimately, I wanted to study something that had utility and brought me joy.

What did you enjoy about Majoring in English at Trinity?

Majoring in English at Trinity exposed me to a community – of professors and fellows students – where I felt at ease.  The small class sizes within the Department were a pro, allowing me to get to know not only my fellow classmates (and become friends with many) but also my professors.  It was a very safe environment in which ideas could be tested and new theories explored.  It was stimulating while being accessible and friendly, and I look back on all classes I took within the Department fondly.

How did an English Major prepare you for your career?

The skills I honed as an English major are directly transferable to my chosen profession: lawyer.  Both require an ability to read a lot and retain information, write well (clearly, concisely, and with a specific audience in mind), and think critically.  Numerous lawyers I look up to likewise majored in English and/or have a deep appreciation for the major, and it’s always nice to be able to have a quick and easy chat about a favorite book or author.
