Lisa Alvarez-Calderón is the founder and principal of Shine Consulting, an executive coaching and leadership advisory practice. Her work in this role is grounded by her 35-year global human resources leadership career spanning diverse sectors and geographies. Before starting Shine, Alvarez-Calderón served as chief human resources officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She previously worked in Chile for four years as human resources vice president for BHP in the mining sector and as academic director for the University of Chile’s Center for Organizational Engineering. Alvarez-Calderón developed her career in the pharmaceutical sector with Johnson & Johnson and with Bristol-Myers Squibb, including leading HR for the Asia Pacific region based in Singapore and serving as vice president for HR for global research and development. She began her professional life as an HR leadership trainee in the insurance industry with Cigna. Alvarez-Calderón also is a certified executive coach through the Hudson Institute of Coaching and is a member of the International Women’s Forum for senior executive women.

Alvarez-Calderón graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Trinity with a B.A. in political science and honors as a President’s Fellow. She went on to earn an M.B.A. with distinction from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Alvarez-Calderón served as Trinity’s first Funston Trustee from 1994 to 1997 and received the Trinity Alumni Medal for Excellence in 1998 before rejoining the board as a Charter Trustee in 2022.

Alvarez-Calderón and her husband have raised two young adult sons and live on Chincoteague Island, Virginia.
