We plan to record the final rehearsal of each ensemble and stream as a performance during the final weeks of the semester

All music performance classes are allowed a short extended Add/Drop period by the Registrar’s Office.

 

MUSC-105 Instrumental Ensembles–In Person, 10 weeks (beginning March 1)

The Trinity College Chamber Ensembles Program is a half-credit course that supports the study and performance of music from five centuries of chamber music repertoire. Each semester, groups are formed and assigned a professional musical coach and repertoire to study and prepare for performance. The goal of the program is to provide the students with an opportunity to survey the vast literature of chamber music and to receive training in ensemble playing skills. We hope to be able to stream our final rehearsals.

Audition required–Contact Ms. Curran for a Remote Audition or if you have questions. Auditions are approximately fifteen minutes and include a prepared piece; scales; and sight-reading.

 

 

MUSC-107 Private Music Lessons, 13 weeks (beginning February 8)

Mode: Most Lessons are Conducted Remotely

Prerequisite: A basic understanding of note reading and musical terminology is required for Lessons. If you have no previous experience with musical notation, you may concurrently take MUSC-101 Basic Musicianship to fulfill this requirement.

Zoom orientation meeting required

Class times arranged by each student in consultation with instructor of choice.

Individual instruction in voice or an instrument is offered by professional musician/teachers approved by the Department of Music. In order to register for the course, students must contact an instructor and schedule lessons at student’s and instructor’s convenience. An additional fee of $600 is required to pay the instructor for eleven one-hour weekly private lessons, payable directly to the instructor. Financial aid to cover instructors’ fees is available on a limited basis to Trinity Grant students taking private lessons for credit, as well as to organ students, carillon students, InterArts students, etc. To apply for the Trinity Grant award for Lessons, fill out the questionnaire and return it to Professor Allen.

MUSC-108 Steel Pan Ensemble–In Person, 10 weeks (beginning March 1)

Classes Mondays and Wednesdays 7:30-9:00 pm

Students will learn the history and social significance of steel pan music in Trinidad. Additionally, students will understand the musical roles of each instrument in the ensemble and learn the techniques associated with playing each of them. Students will be expected to learn and memorize arrangements of classical, popular, and traditional calypso music. The music will be taught aurally and by rote by the Director, a steel pan teacher from Trinidad.

MUSC-109 Jazz Ensemble–In Person, 10 weeks (beginning March 1)

Classes Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:30-9:00 pm

Jazz is America’s own art form! The Jazz Ensemble studies and performs the compositions of Ellington, Monk, Coltrane, Hancock, and others, as well as original works by Professor Allen and the group members. Styles span the gamut of jazz history, from traditional swing to fusion and funk. We will work hard on improving individually and as a group, with focus on creative improvising, group interplay, and solid grooves.

Membership is by audition. Contact Professor Allen and attend first class to audition.

 

 

MUSC-111 Samba Ensemble–In Person, 10 weeks (.5 credit)

Class is held Mondays and Wednesdays 6:00-7:30 pm

Emphasis is on the study and performance of the Brazilian samba drumming tradition. Related musical styles and genres also included. Students may take this course for more than one semester.
