This course is a hands-on approach to learning about the music of Afro-Brazilian culture, religion, and movement.  Genres and styles will include Maculelê (an Afro-Brazilian stick dance), Capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian Martial Art/Dance/Game), Maracatu, samba, pagode, samba reggae, timbalada, We will explore how these forms helped to define “Brazil” within globally-popularized recordings of bossa nova and MPB (Popular Brazilian Music).

No previous experience in music is required. This course also counts towards an elective for International Studies-Latin American and Caribbean studies.
