As the Director of Muslim Life at Trinity College, I am privileged to lead a program that provides a vibrant and inclusive space for students to explore spirituality, engage in interfaith dialogue, and contribute to community outreach. Rooted in the core principles and ethics of Islam, the Muslim Life program emphasizes compassion, mutual understanding, and spiritual growth, fostering a strong sense of community among Muslim students while promoting intercultural exchange and respect across the campus.
Under the guidance of the College Chaplain and Dean of Spiritual & Religious Life, Marcus Halley, and with the dedication of the Muslim Students Association (MSA), the program has achieved many milestones in addressing the needs of Muslim students and staff. When I began my role in October 2024, I prioritized both sustaining the impactful programs already in place and introducing new initiatives to enhance the vibrancy of Muslim Life on campus.
One of the highlights of our efforts is our weekly Friday Prayer and Lunch, which is open to all students. What started with an average attendance of 15 students has now grown to a lively gathering of around 30 attendees. These gatherings offer not only a space for communal prayer but also an atmosphere of warmth, friendship, and brotherhood during the shared meal afterward. Additionally, we’ve established daily prayers at 12 PM (Dhuhr) and 3 PM (Asr), providing opportunities for reflection and connection throughout the week.
Beyond prayer, I make myself available for one-on-one or small group meetings, offering guidance, answering questions, or simply connecting with students. The MSA and I work hand in hand to cultivate a supportive, inclusive, and welcoming community that contributes positively to campus life.
We are also excited about future projects, including interfaith initiatives like “Abraham’s Table: Wisdoms from Him for Our Shared Journey,” an event designed to foster dialogue and unity among Muslim, Jewish, and Christian students by exploring shared values and traditions.
Weekly Suhbah Circle: A Space for Reflection and Fellowship
Among the many activities we offer, the Weekly Suhbah Circle stands out as a particularly meaningful initiative. Every Monday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, students gather to embark on a journey of learning, reflection, and companionship. Inspired by the concept of Suhbah — meaning “companionship” or “fellowship” — this gathering serves as a space to grow together in knowledge and understanding, supporting one another in our spiritual and personal journeys.
During each session, we delve into a hadith from classic Islamic texts such as Imam Nawawi’s Forty Hadith, uncovering timeless wisdom and discussing its relevance to our modern lives. Participants are encouraged to share their reflections, ask questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Each session concludes with a short, inspiring video followed by a group discussion, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support.
To make these evenings even more special, I serve fresh Turkish tea brewed in a traditional samovar, along with coffee, biscuits, chocolates, and cakes. This brief break allows participants to enjoy a small treat while connecting with one another in an informal and welcoming setting.
The Weekly Suhbah Circle is more than just a gathering; it is a safe space for honest reflection, learning, and fellowship. It exemplifies the essence of Muslim Life at Trinity College — a community that nurtures the soul, strengthens bonds, and promotes growth in a warm, inclusive environment.
I invite you to join us and experience the transformative power of community, knowledge, and shared purpose. Together, we can continue building bridges and enriching lives here at Trinity College.
