Meet the Professors: Get to know new faculty in the Economics Department – Hanae Bouzza
Interview with Professor Hanae Bouazza
Professor Hanae Bouazza, Class of 2020, returned to Trinity in Fall 2026 full time after teaching individual courses for several years. During the 2026-7 academic year, she will teach ECON 218 Introduction to Statistics for Economics and ECON 372 Macroeconomics of Structural Transformation.
Q: How did you become interested in economics?
HB: I was drawn to how a few analytical tools could clarify complex real-world questions, such as how market power affects consumers. As I took more economics courses, I found they gave me a clearer way to understand the world around me.
Q: Would you please describe a recent paper?
HB: My recent research examines the land requirements and costs of a fully renewable U.S. electricity system centered on solar and wind power. I find that strategic siting and dual-use approaches, which allow energy infrastructure to coexist with other land uses, can substantially reduce the need for new land dedicated solely to energy generation. These approaches can support a renewable transition at costs below 2024 U.S. energy expenditures, suggesting that land and cost constraints are manageable with careful planning.
Q: What elective courses are you teaching this year?
HB: I am teaching ECON 372 Macroeconomics of Structural Change. ECON 372 first develops core concepts and macroeconomic models and then applies them to contemporary policy questions and country case studies on economic transformation, growth, and resilience. ECON 372 helps students interpret the policy debates they encounter in the news and equips them with analytical tools to develop their own informed views on economic change.
