AI @ Trinity
Engaging AI with judgment, agency, and the values of a liberal arts college.
Artificial intelligence is impacting how people learn, work, and make decisions, both quickly and unevenly. Trinity is neither retreating from AI nor adopting it uncritically. We want to ensure our community understands AI well enough to decide how, where, and whether to use it.
This is a liberal arts question as much as a technical one. Using AI well depends on the capacities we value: asking good questions, weighing evidence, exercising judgment, and acting ethically.
Our Approach
Agency
Learning is our priority. Using AI only when and as appropriate is a choice. It requires practicing integrity and thinking independently.
Clear Eyes
AI creates opportunities and costs. We take both seriously and keep both in view.
Learning As we Go
This technology is moving fast. Our guidance will evolve with it, and our community will help shape its use across campus.
TWO PATHS
Whether it’s in the classroom or streamlining day-to-day tasks, Trinity takes an intentional and human-centered approach to AI. Learn more about how we’re using AI in academics and college operations below.
AI in Academics
Trinity takes a human-first approach to AI in the classroom. Durable human skills like critical thinking, creativity, and ethical reasoning should drive how AI is, or is not, used. Faculty decide whether and how AI fits their own courses and research. Students have the opportunity to build AI literacy in their first year and develop fluency across four years, including the judgment to know when not to use it.
AI in College Operations
AI can assist with some of the routine work so that staff have more time for students, colleagues, and the problems that need human judgment. We adopt it deliberately, with clear guardrails, and with people doing the work at the center. Everyone at Trinity has access to college-supported AI tools. Offices with needs for specialized tools, like Claude Code, Codex, etc. can propose a use case that will go through a governance process for evaluation and support.
