Are you interested in working on a team to answer research questions raised by a Hartford community partner organization? The Liberal Arts Action Lab is accepting student applications for the Fall 2026 semester by March 25, 2026.
The application asks for your project and time preferences and takes about 10-15 minutes to complete.

About the Liberal Arts Action Lab:
In the Liberal Arts Action Lab, Hartford community partners define projects and collaborate with teams of students and faculty from Trinity College and CT State Community College to research and publicly share work.
Students earn 2 Trinity credits for two courses:

LAAL 200 Action Research Methods in Hartford (meets on Monday afternoons, from 1:30-4:10 pm) and
-
LAAL 201 Hartford Research Project (meets either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday afternoons, from 1:30-4:10 pm, or Tuesday or Wednesday evenings, from 6:30-9:00 pm at Trinity Downtown Campus, 1 Constitution Plaza).
These cross-referenced courses count toward majors in Educational Studies, Human Rights, Public Policy and Law, Urban Studies, or possible other majors, in consultation with your advisor. The Research Methods course also fulfills the Numerical and Symbolic Reasoning requirement, and the project course can fulfill a Wellness requirement.
Fall 2026 Action Lab project opportunities:

Participatory Budgeting in Hartford with Hartford Decide$: Research how to increase resident participation in Hartford’s participatory budgeting process by examining engagement strategies, identifying barriers, and conducting surveys and interviews to inform tools and recommendations that expand community decision-making power.

Highway Impacts & Neighborhood Change with Northside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance (NINA): Investigate how the construction of I-84 reshaped Asylum Hill by analyzing historic demolitions, population loss, property values, and tax impacts to produce maps and visual materials that support community advocacy and future development decisions.

Housing Affordability in Hartford with Partnership for Strong Communities: Examine barriers Hartford residents face in accessing rental housing by researching affordability trends, rental availability, security deposits, and housing policies to create data-driven reports and visualizations that support housing equity advocacy.
