Can humans change the inner life of God? If so, how? Jewish mysticism’s vast field of texts, ideas and practices constitute a significant force in Jewish history and indeed the religious history of humankind.

This course introduces its basic development and salient trends. We will observe how Jewish mysticism seeks to integrate thought and practice in the service of God, and even to facilitate direct knowledge of, and intimate communion with, divinity itself. Starting with formative Biblical and Rabbinic texts, we will trace Jewish mysticism across the ages, through late antiquity and up through the present day. Our readings will be blend primary and secondary sources, all in English. No prior knowledge of the Jewish tradition is required. TR 2:55pm – 4:10pm. Prof. Ben Steiner.
