Having a study away experience is not only at the\u00a0<\/span>core<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>Trinity<\/span>\u2019s mission but is\u00a0<\/span>an exciting way\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0students to continue learning<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>growing<\/span>\u00a0and adding to their personal and professional<\/span>\u00a0portfolio<\/span>s.\u00a0<\/span>For those interested in exploring all the\u00a0<\/span>available\u00a0<\/span>options, the Office of Study Away<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(OSA)\u00a0<\/span>is their hub.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each person in our office has lived and traveled abroad and has extensive experience in the field of study away.\u00a0 We take a holistic approach to study away advising by getting to know each student we meet with so that we can best recommend programs that will benefit the whole person \u2013 academically, personally, and emotionally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Navigating<\/span>\u00a0the processes and deadlines for studying away can be\u00a0<\/span>a lot\u00a0<\/span>so<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>we ask that each student come into our office to meet with an advisor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Students interested in studying away are matched with a study away advisor who works closely with them through the process of choosing the best program for their personal and academic needs, navigating the various deadlines and application pieces, and helping to set expectations for their upcoming experience. Once students are on their study away program, their study away advisor is always available to them, as well as when they return to campus, providing any assistance they need in adjusting to life in their study away location, as well as back home<\/span>\u00a0at the end of their adventure<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most students planning to study away say that one of their goals is to become more independent and for many,\u00a0<\/span>studying away is the first time they have been responsible for themselves.\u00a0 With that independence comes excitement and increased confidence but also a lot of frustration along the way.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The first two weeks of any program is usually filled with a lot of excitement and energy as they explore their new surroundings.\u00a0 But after that<\/span>\u00a0honeymoon period wears\u00a0<\/span>off,<\/span>\u00a0they must start building a\u00a0<\/span>new\u00a0<\/span>life and routine in a foreign place and culture and sometimes in another language. It is hard and they will have many good and bad days plus homesickness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s hard.\u00a0<\/span>The good news is that they get through it, they have a semester of growth and come home more mature, independent and resourceful people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your support and involvement\u00a0<\/span>in their journey\u00a0<\/span>are vital,\u00a0<\/span>and one of the best things you can do for<\/span>\u00a0your\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0student is to empower them t<\/span>o be responsible for their\u00a0<\/span>study away\u00a0<\/span>experience by managing as much of the deadlines and processes as possible<\/span>\u00a0by themselves<\/span>.\u00a0 This is a time for tremendous personal growth, and we are looking forward to working together with your student on their study away plans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A<\/span>cademic\u00a0<\/span>expectations:<\/span><\/h3>\n

First and foremost, studying away is a rigorous academic endeavor and\u00a0<\/span>is not a break.\u00a0 Students should be prepared to work hard.\u00a0 In many respects, studying away can be more challenging academically because of different academic cultures<\/span>. In many countries, students are expected to be more responsible and self-driven and able to work\u00a0<\/span>independently<\/span>\u00a0without as\u00a0<\/span>many checks and balances as they\u00a0<\/span>may\u00a0<\/span>be\u00a0<\/span>accustomed<\/span>\u00a0to at their home institution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For<\/span>\u00a0example,\u00a0<\/span>in many\u00a0<\/span>countries\u00a0<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0students should expect to have only a few tests during the semester and upwards of\u00a0<\/span>70% of their final grade based on their final exam or project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Studying away can also be a challenge\u00a0<\/span>because there are\u00a0<\/span>many\u00a0<\/span>more distractions<\/span>.\u00a0 W<\/span>hile we fully recognize that a significant part of the study away experience is travelling and exploring, it is still an academic endeavor so students must manage their time constructively.\u00a0 For this reason, Trinity\u00a0<\/span>students interested in studying<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are required\u00a0<\/span>to have at least a 2.5 GPA\u00a0<\/span>in order to be approved to study away, regardless of the GPA requirements of any program(s) they are interested on.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In preparation for their study away experience, all\u00a0<\/span>Trinity\u00a0<\/span>students must meet with their academic advisor to get approval for the courses they plan to take while away, as well as to\u00a0<\/span>plan out their remaining semesters at Trinity to ensure that they will stay on track with their general education and major requirements for graduation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Language study:<\/span><\/h3>\n

One of the most practical and immediate benefits of studying abroad is language acquisition.\u00a0 Encourage your student to consider programs that provide an opportunity to study another language, especially in an immersive or semi-immersive manner.\u00a0 In addition to the cultural insights that your students will gain, language skills are becoming an increasingly important differentiator among hiring managers.\u00a0 Even if your student is not proficient, a solid working knowledge of another language indicates an openness to – and an appreciation for – other cultures which is a critical 21st century skill.\u00a0 And if your student has not studied a language\u00a0<\/span>before<\/span>, encourage them to start learning!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Behavioral c<\/span>onduct<\/span> and expectations:<\/span><\/h3>\n

While students are on their study away program,\u00a0<\/span>they are responsible for knowing and adhering\u00a0 to all\u00a0<\/span>rules and\u00a0<\/span>policies of their program,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>host\u00a0<\/span>university and\u00a0<\/span>their host country, in addition to upholding Trinity\u2019s standards of good conduct which can be found in the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Trinity College Student Handbook<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Returning home:<\/span><\/h3>\n

Most study a<\/span>way<\/span>\u00a0students say their time a<\/span>way<\/span> changed them for life. How widespread and deep those changes are will vary for each person based on their experience and what type of a person they are.\u00a0 Returning home after such a transformative experience can be <\/span>bittersweet<\/span>.\u00a0 They are<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0of course<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0so excited to be back with family and friends and all things familiar, but they may miss the adventure and excitement of daily life\u00a0<\/span>on their program<\/span>.\u00a0 It is helpful to understand this wide range of emotions and feelings that your student may be experiencing.\u00a0 Your student has changed, and some of these changes will be obvious and others more subtle.\u00a0 Be patient and take time to get reacquainted, acknowledging that you may not be able to help your student adjust.\u00a0 It is just part of the process that will continue to evolve for years to come.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
