Featuring prominent scholars, activists, and other experts based in Cape Town, the course provides a holistic perspective on South Africa&#8217;s role in a global context. Each lecture\/presentation will focus on different aspects of South Africa&#8217;s past and present, covering topics such as apartheid and its legacies, the ongoing struggles for social justice, environmental issues, and arts and cultural production. Students will gain a deeper understanding of South Africa&#8217;s challenges and triumphs, and how these experiences resonate with broader global trends. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with a well-rounded understanding of South Africa&#8217;s place in the world, fostering a critical appreciation of the complex factors shaping the nation today.<\/p>\n<p>Course includes excursions to Stellenbosch, Johannesburg and Durban Kwa Zulu Natal<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Required<\/strong> Course at UWC Center for Multilingualism and Diversities Research (CMDR)<\/h6>\n<p>How does difference in language and communication repertoires intersect with ethnicity, race, class, sex\/gender\/sexual orientation, age, (dis)ability, religion, and other markers of identity to create deep vulnerabilities and to compound injustices? In what ways does multilingualism provide crucial vantage points into understanding and supporting social justice and advancing knowledge about how language-related injustice can curtail people\u2019s rights and well-being? To answer these questions, Trinity College is partnering with the University of Western Cape\u2019s Center for Multilingualism and Diversities Research (CMDR).<\/p>\n<p>Students will enroll in 1 course at the CMDR. Student will be provided with options of available courses from the CMDR shortly before the start of the semester<\/p>\n<p>An example of a possible course is &#8220;Multilingual Diversity and Bi-\/Multilingual Education: Beginnings, Transitions and Futures\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Required<\/strong> Internship Lab: Multilingualism and Social Consciousness<\/h6>\n<p>Students must enroll in a lab titled \u201cMultilingualism and Social Consciousness\u201d. Taken together, students will process their internship experience by gaining an understanding of human rights discourses in South Africa through the critical lens of multilingualism and studying the connection between linguistic diversity and social justice activism. Students will be expected to complete a final project, presenting on what they have learned about multilingualism and social justice advocacy in the context of their internship work.<\/p>\n<p>Internship Hours<strong>:<\/strong> 8-10 hours per week. All interns must complete their weekly hours either 1 day or 2 days a week to maximize effective participation, supervision and mentorship.\u00a0 Spreading out your internship hours across 3-5 days of the week is not permitted.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/studyaway\/capetown\/experiential-learning\/\">Experiential Learning<\/a> page to view internship options.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>University Courses<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Students will take 2 courses at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Since its groundbreaking foundation in 1959 as an apartheid-era university for &#8220;Coloured&#8221; people, UWC has played a pivotal role in the development of democratic South Africa. Located 15 miles from the city center in suburban Bellville, Trinity students at the UWC take a free half-hour shuttle to class. Enrolling about 15,000 students, including only 300 international students, it is a great option for study abroad students interested in immersing themselves in South African society.<\/div>\n<h6><strong>University Size<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The University of Western Cape enrolls approximately 20,000 students (undergraduate and graduate) and is located in the suburb of Bellville.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Academic Differences<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">The academic system in South Africa is different from what you are used to in the U.S. It is more similar to the British tutorial system, with which some of you may be familiar.\u00a0 South African students do not take many electives or general education requirements. Thus, they specialize in\u00a0 their\u00a0 majors\u00a0 or\u00a0 fields\u00a0 of\u00a0 study\u00a0 earlier\u00a0 and\u00a0 often\u00a0 are\u00a0 more\u00a0 advanced\u00a0 in\u00a0 their concentrations\u00a0 than\u00a0 U.S. students\u00a0 are\u00a0 as\u00a0 undergraduates.\u00a0 Professors\u00a0 expect\u00a0 students\u00a0 to\u00a0 be\u00a0 independent,\u00a0 self motivated,\u00a0 and\u00a0 able\u00a0 to keep up with their reading and prepare for the final examinations without receiving as much direction (such as\u00a0 regular\u00a0 help,\u00a0 homework\u00a0 to\u00a0 keep\u00a0 you\u00a0 on\u00a0 track,\u00a0 very\u00a0 specific\u00a0 reading\u00a0 lists,\u00a0 etc.).\u00a0 In\u00a0 short,\u00a0 the\u00a0 system\u00a0 is geared\u00a0 toward\u00a0 students\u00a0 who\u00a0 are\u00a0 self-sufficient,\u00a0 hard-working,\u00a0 and\u00a0 deeply\u00a0 interested\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 subject\u00a0 matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Students\u00a0 have\u00a0 greater\u00a0 responsibility\u00a0 and\u00a0 must\u00a0 show\u00a0 greater\u00a0 initiative\u00a0 in\u00a0 a\u00a0 less structured\u00a0 environment. Depending\u00a0 on\u00a0 the\u00a0 course\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 professor,\u00a0 there\u00a0 may\u00a0 not\u00a0 be\u00a0 a\u00a0 syllabus\u00a0 or\u00a0 regular\u00a0 homework.
