To foster a sociological imagination<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand the reciprocal relationship between the individual and society<\/li>\n<li>Describe similarities and differences between sociology and other social sciences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">2. To gain knowledge of sociological theory and its contributions to knowledge<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Compare and contrast major theoretical orientations<\/li>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Apply these theoretical approaches to one area of social reality<\/li>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Situate these theories in their proper historical contexts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">3. To gain knowledge of the methodological approaches in sociology<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Assess the strengths and weaknesses of different methodological approaches<\/li>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Construct and implement a research design utilizing one or more of these approaches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">4. To gain knowledge of the core concepts of a sociological perspective<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Identity \u2013 how the self is socially constructed<\/li>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Culture \u2013 how norms, values, and shared meanings emerge and change<\/li>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Social structures \u2013 how the structure and function of social institutions affect life chances<\/li>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Social stratification \u2013 how patterned inequalities persist, change, and affect social life<\/li>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Power \u2013 how dynamics of coercion and constraint take shape<\/li>\n<li class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Social change \u2013 how societies change through shifts in resources, power, and protest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
