John Qui\u00f1ones, broadcast journalist and host of the ABC television show\u00a0What Would You Do?<\/em>, came to Trinity on September 17 to help kick off Latine Heritage Month at the college. Members of the Trinity community gathered in Mather Hall\u2019s Washington Room to learn about Qui\u00f1ones\u2019s personal and professional journey and\u00a0how he ultimately used education as a tool to build his legacy as a Latine.\u00a0But first, he noted, he had to break many barriers on his way to becoming one of the first Latine correspondents at ABC News.<\/p>\n

Qui\u00f1ones shared\u00a0that he came from humble beginnings, including working the fields as a migrant farm worker. As a Mexican-American, he grew up in a Spanish-speaking household with his mother, a housecleaner, and his father, a janitor. Qui\u00f1ones did not start learning English until the first grade.<\/p>\n

Since age 13, Qui\u00f1ones dreamed of pursuing journalism. The government anti-poverty assistance program\u00a0Upward Bound enabled him to become a first-generation college student. However, when applying to journalism jobs in his home state of Texas, he was met with rejection due to quotas for Latine journalists. While he felt like giving up, he persevered and went on to earn a master\u2019s degree in journalism from Columbia University. Eventually, Qui\u00f1ones was recognized with seven Emmy Awards.<\/p>\n

On his show\u00a0What Would You Do?,<\/em>\u00a0Qui\u00f1ones uses social experiments to illuminate current social and political issues in America. Hidden cameras capture how ordinary Americans react to injustice. To date, more than 1,000 scenarios have been presented in the show\u2019s 14 years of filming. In the words of Qui\u00f1ones, \u201cDo you step in or step away when no one is watching? Silence is complicity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Qui\u00f1ones called on the audience to be \u201cactive bystanders and not just passive observers.\u201d \u201cPut yourself in the shoes of the victim,\u201d said Qui\u00f1ones, who noted that Latines and others who face adversity are often most willing to be compassionate with others because they know firsthand what it is like to face discrimination. \u201cWe need to give a voice to the voiceless.\u201d<\/p>\n
