These services are attractive to unscrupulous persons who would like to have free access for activities such as sending large batches of unsolicited e-mail (commonly referred to as spam), illegally distributing pirated software, or lists of stolen login\/password pairs, running programs to &#8220;crack&#8221; passwords or disrupting computer and network operations both here and at other sites.<\/p>\n<h2>Password Restrictions<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">You can reset your Trinity password by going to <a href=\"http:\/\/password.trincoll.edu\/\">password.trincoll.edu<\/a>. Several requirements are imposed with our password change system to help ensure the security of Trinity accounts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Passwords must be a minimum of 12 characters long, and must include at least three of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">lower-case characters (a-z)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">upper-case characters (A-Z)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">digits 0-9<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">special characters ` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ &amp; ( ) * &#8211; + = | \\ { } [ ] : ; &#8221; &#8216; &lt; &gt; , . ? \/<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Passwords can be changed once a day, and a history is maintained to prevent repeated and predictable use of the same password.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few tips for creating good passwords.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ms-rteElement-H2\">Dos:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Start with a sentence or phrase, and take the first letter of each word and add numbers and\/or symbols<br \/>\nmy dog Sparky is four years old and loves to play fetch becomes mdSi4yo&amp;l2pf<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Use random capitalization:<br \/>\nEBs45kc becomes eBS45Kc<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Employ character substitution for sounds:<br \/>\nwaits becomes w8s<br \/>\nBefore becomes b4<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Incorporate phonetic spellings:<br \/>\nlaugh becomes laf<br \/>\nweight becomes wat<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"ms-rteElement-H2\">Don&#8217;ts:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Include personal information like your initials, name, nickname, phone extension or home number, children&#8217;s names, etc.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Use of common characters or place names from literature or mythology.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Use words that appear in a dictionary.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"fine-you-ve-convinced-me-i-ll-use-a-passphrase-what-else-can-i-do-to-increase-my-security-\">What else can I do to increase my security?<\/h2>\n<p>The recipe for perfect password management is straightforward.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-use-a-password-manager-\">1. Use a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/lits\/technology\/security\/best-practices\/password-managers\/\"> password manager<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<p>Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer all have built-in password managers. But if you plan to use your passwords across devices, you probably should use one of these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lastpass.com\/\"><strong>LastPass<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(iOS, Android; Chrome plugin works on Windows, Mac, Linux)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/agilebits.com\/onepassword\"><strong>1 Password<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Windows, Mac, iOS, Android)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/keepass.info\/\"><strong>KeePass<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Linux, Windows, Mac, Android)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"2-use-a-strong-u-master-password-u-for-your-password-manager-\">2. Use a strong\u00a0<u>master password<\/u>\u00a0for your password manager.<\/h3>\n<p>This is when a passphrase would be especially useful.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-use-a-different-passphrase-for-every-site-\">3.
