Microsoft is moving organizations toward stronger, phishing-resistant authentication methods such as Passkeys and Microsoft Authenticator.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIn preparation for this change, Trinity College will begin transitioning users away from SMS text message and voice call authentication methods during the 2026-2027 academic year.\n<\/p>\n<h3>What You Need to Know<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>SMS text messages and voice calls will no longer be supported by Microsoft after February 1, 2027.<\/li>\n<li>Users currently relying on these methods will need to register an alternative authentication method.<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft will begin prompting affected users to enroll Passkeys during sign-in starting September 2026.<\/li>\n<li>You do not need to wait for Microsoft&#8217;s prompts and can switch today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Recommended Authentication Methods<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Passkeys (recommended)<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Authenticator<\/li>\n<li>FIDO2 Security Keys (such as YubiKeys)<\/li>\n<li>Other supported one-time password (OTP) applications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nMicrosoft is retiring SMS and voice authentication because these methods are more susceptible to phishing, social engineering, and account takeover attacks. Trinity&#8217;s long-term direction aligns with Microsoft&#8217;s move toward passwordless and phishing-resistant authentication.\n<\/p>\n<h3>Important Dates<\/h3>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Date<\/th>\n<th>What Happens<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>September 1, 2026<\/td>\n<td>Users configured for SMS text messages or voice calls will begin receiving Microsoft prompts to register a Passkey during sign-in.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>February 1, 2027<\/td>\n<td>Microsoft retires SMS text message and voice call authentication.
