This should ALWAYS be in the public_html folder. In the example below it is “public_html/research”. Custom domains can be useful, but they also come with extra responsibilities. You need to register and pay for the domain, renew it every year, manage DNS settings, and make sure it continues to point to the correct site.

First you need to purchase and register a domain. You can purchase a domain from many different companies but you can also purchase it directly from your cPanel via the “Register Apex Domain” Application. Once you have your domain purchased you need to change some settings to point it to your trincoll.edu domain.

Prepare your trincoll.edu domain:

Go to the Domains application in the cPanel and choose Create a new domain.

Leave Registered Domain selected

Enter your new domain name in the Domain field.

If you want the new name to point to the main/top level trincoll.edu domain leave the “Share document root” box checked. If you want to use another location uncheck that box and enter the file location where you want the files to live for the site.

Click Submit

If you purchased your domain directly from the cPanel application you are all done! If not follow the steps below

Point your custom domain to your trincoll.edu domain: (this is NOT necessary if you purchased your domain directly from your cPanel.)

You will have to update the DNS servers settings where you purchased your domain. This process will vary from company to company so follow their instructions.

Enter the DNS servers for domains.trincoll.edu in the appropriate place in your custom domain settings. They are:

ns1.reclaimhosting.com

ns2.reclaimhosting.com

Once these changes are saved it may take some time to take effect.

Feel free to reach out to the Digital Learning & Scholarship Team with any questions

Your domain can contain more than one website or project.
