{"id":762,"date":"2020-09-09T19:47:41","date_gmt":"2020-09-09T19:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/studyaway\/?page_id=762"},"modified":"2026-08-19T16:44:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T16:44:25","slug":"overview","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/geo\/trinitylamama\/overview\/","title":{"rendered":"Overview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span data-ogsc=\"black\">Trinity\/La MaMa<\/span><\/b><span data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0is a unique performing arts program, immersing students in the cutting-edge theater and dance scene of New York City. \u00a0It is the only one of its kind in the nation. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">Students from around the country keep developing their skills in ongoing technique classes and get to experience a wide variety of styles and approaches in workshops with noted NYC based artists. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoBodyText\" data-ogsc=\"\">Students attend around 50 performances during the course of the semester and learn first-hand about the vibrant world of the NYC arts scene. \u00a0They then critically discuss and contextually place these performances in a two course-credit seminar entitled \u201cPerformance Analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">Students also participate in a field study\/internship with a dynamic arts organization to learn how artists get their work out and survive in the challenging climate for arts in this country. Beyond the experience this offers during the semester, students get to network and make invaluable life-long connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">In addition to the rich curriculum, students experience living in New York City and become comfortable with navigating what is arguably the most vibrant, diverse and stimulating metropolis in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">Trinity\/La MaMa follows a model created in the Theater and Dance department at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, which is a blending of the academic and the experiential. \u00a0It is integrally connected to the curriculum of the department. \u00a0The program provides students from Trinity and other schools with a full semester of undergraduate or graduate credit. \u00a0Students receive a transcript from the Trinity College registrar upon completion of the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Staff &amp; Faculty:<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/studyaway\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/2020\/11\/Barbara-Karger-263x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/geo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/2020\/11\/Barbara-Karger-263x300.jpeg 263w, https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/geo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/2020\/11\/Barbara-Karger.jpeg 402w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/> <b>Barbara Karger \u2013 Program Director &amp; Associate Professor of Theater and Dance at Trinity College<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Was born and raised in Vienna, Austria. She received her Master\u2019s Degree in Physical Theater from the renowned Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany. After graduation, she and fellow classmates co-founded <em>Antagon-Theater<\/em> and created two original shows that were performed throughout Europe. After the group disbanded, she became a movement choreographer for productions in theaters such as Schauspielhaus Z\u00fcrich, Schauspielhaus D\u00fcsseldorf, Stadttheater Stuttgart, and Halleschen Ufer and Kulturfabrik in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>As a performer, she toured the world with the acclaimed Swiss mask theatre group <em>Mummenschanz <\/em>for three years, which brought her to 6 continents. She also appeared in productions in Europe and the U.S. by groups such as <em>xx-project<\/em>, <em>Bobo Dance<\/em>, <em>Faustwork<\/em>, <em>Circus Flora<\/em>, and <em>Ripe Time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>S<\/em>he co-directed the original musical <em>Ludwig II,<\/em> which ran for three years in F\u00fcssen, Germany. Other directing credits include New York Goofs\u2018<em> Clown Brain <\/em>at the Flea Theater and Coffee Cup Company\u2019s <em>Standing Clear.<\/em> She has collaborated with her husband Michael Preston on such shows as a full-length version of <em>Peter and the Wolf<\/em> in Antwerp and Amsterdam, the Bindlestiff Family Circus\u2018 <em>High Heels and Red Noses<\/em> and <em>From the Gutter to the Glitter<\/em>, and Doug Elkins\u2018 and Friends award-winning, <em>Fr\u00e4ulein Maria<\/em>, which toured the United States for five years.<\/p>\n<p>She has been teaching around the world for decades and held positions at NYU, Cooper Union, and the New School before joining the faculty at Trinity College in Hartford, CT in 2004. As an Associate Professor, she has taught courses in Directing, Voice, Physical Theater, Playwriting, and various levels of Acting. She has also been the Chairperson of the Department of Theater and Dance at Trinity College for a number of past years. Favorites among the student productions that she directed include <em>Cloud Nine<\/em>, <em>The Laramie Project<\/em>, \u2018<em>Tis Pity She\u2019s a Whore<\/em>, and <em>Spring Awakening <\/em>(which she also translated). In 2018 she took on the directorship of the Trinity\/La MaMa Performing Arts Program. She is an alumna of Trinity\/La MaMa from 2023 and thrilled to be returning to this incredible program as the Program Coordinator. Elie is a stage manager and arts administrator dedicated to realizing artistic visions, telling original stories, and fostering empathy.
