{"id":161,"date":"2020-10-27T20:36:16","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T20:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/frc\/?page_id=161"},"modified":"2026-01-22T14:36:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T14:36:27","slug":"lecture-series","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/frc\/lecture-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Lecture Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Spring 2026<\/h2>\n<h6>Lectures will take place in Dangremond Family Commons during Common Hour, 12:15p.m. &#8211; 1:30p.m.<\/h6>\n<h4>January 29<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Studying Study Drugs: A Research Program\u2019s Path from Discovery to Intervention by Professor of Psychology Laura Holt<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A growing number of college students are diagnosed with attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and use prescription stimulant medication to support their personal and academic functioning, yet this everyday medical reality creates a complex social landscape around requests for, sharing, and misuse of these medications. Dr. Holt\u2019s talk traces the development of a research program aimed at understanding why these \u201cstudy drugs\u201d circulate socially and how to reduce the risks they pose, with an emphasis on the experiences of students who are prescribed stimulant medications.<\/p>\n<p>Early projects examined why students feel pressured to share their medication, how they refuse requests for their medication, and the most effective ways to refuse requests. Building on this foundation, the recent work of Dr. Holt\u2019s lab has investigated real-world patterns among students who refuse medication requests and has tested a brief, web-based intervention for students who are prescribed stimulants. This talk will highlight findings from an evaluation of the web-based intervention, noting how it affected students\u2019 perceptions of risk, norms, self-efficacy, and their likelihood of sharing or misusing their medication. The talk also will explore why intervening to change behavior in this domain is so challenging, and next steps for supporting students with stimulant prescriptions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>April 16<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Harnessing Light for Greener Chemistry by Associate Professor of Chemistry Cheyenne Brindle<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Organic chemistry is at the heart of the creation of new substances. From pharmaceuticals to fuels, organic reactions are used to create the materials and products that surround us. The processes that create these products also generate waste that can have harmful impacts on our environment and our health. Greener methods that improve on sustainability and safety metrics are needed. A powerful strategy is to use light to drive chemical reactions rather than using high energy chemical reagents that are inherently dangerous. Using chemical design principles, new molecules with the ability to absorb light have been created with the goal of using these molecules to drive green chemical reactions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>April 30<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>The Biomechanics of Ventricular Pumping by Vernon D. Roosa Professor of Applied Science Joseph Palladino<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The human heart is a remarkable pump, whose biomechanical properties arise from its constituent heart muscle.
