A &#8220;fellowship recommendation&#8221; is neither a\u00a0graduate school recommendation nor a\u00a0job reference, although either can be adapted to serve the purpose. To be most effective, a fellowship letter should be\u00a0tailored to the aims of the sponsoring foundation.\u00a0Candidates should provide recommenders with information about the fellowship requirements and about their own goals and aspirations, usually in the form of\u00a0the application essays.\u00a0The best\u00a0recommendation letter will speak directly to these\u00a0questions, and will provide compelling evidence of the applicant&#8217;s suitability for\u00a0a particular fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>It can be helpful to emphasize strong performance in especially difficult or higher level courses.\u00a0Likewise,\u00a0comparing the student to others you have taught can provide useful context.\u00a0\u00a0It may be\u00a0advisable to avoid\u00a0comments like\u00a0&#8220;he never missed a class&#8221; or &#8220;she always did the\u00a0reading,&#8221;\u00a0 implying that this is not the norm at Trinity.\u00a0Offering examples of exceptional performance beyond the merely expected will serve the candidate\u00a0better.\u00a0\u00a0In general, letters rich in detail and specifics about the applicant&#8217;s intellectual interests, accomplishments and potential are most helpful.<\/p>\n<p>For tips that can be applied to most fellowship letters, see the\u00a0Truman Foundation and Marshall Scholarship sites:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.gov\/faculty-reps\/faq-faculty-reps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Truman Foundation<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshallscholarship.org\/applications\/recommendersinfo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Marshall Scholarship<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Guidelines adapted from National Association of Fellowship Advisors<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Writing a Recommendation for the\u00a0Marshall Scholarship<\/h2>\n<p>Approximately 40 Marshall Scholarships are awarded each year to &#8220;&#8230;intellectually distinguished young Americans who will one day become leaders, opinion formers and decision makers in their own country&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 Applicants must demonstrate exceptional academic ability, mature character, and the capacity to play an active part in the life of a UK university.\u00a0 In addition to a 1000 word personal essay and a shorter but important proposed program of study, applications require <strong>recommendation letters<\/strong>\u00a0from four persons, at least two of whom must be academics.\u00a0 Three must be in the U.S.\u00a0 If you do not know the students well enough to write a detailed letter that emphasizes his or her achievements while also reflecting warm regard, or if you cannot write in strong support, please encourage him or her to seek another reference.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants should provide copies of their draft personal essays and proposed academic program to each prospective recommender, and must work particularly closely with the individual designated as the Preferred Reference, whose letter carries greatest weight and is expected to be a detailed discussion of academic performance and potential.<\/p>\n<h3>Criteria for the Scholarship:<\/h3>\n<p>\u2022Distinction of intellect and character as evidenced by both academic attainments and other activities and achievements<br \/>\n\u2022 Demonstrated strength in the major field, and adequate preparation for the proposed course of study<br \/>\n\u2022Ability to participate actively in the UK university, and potential to make a significant contribution in the US<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your letter should:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022Corroborate the applicant&#8217;s own assessment of readiness to undertake the proposed course of study<br \/>\n\u2022Explain why the student stands out above others, and why you have confidence in the student&#8217;s personal and professional promise<br \/>\n\u2022Include detail about your personal connection with the student, and his or her contribution to the relationship<br \/>\n\u2022Present your assessment of the student&#8217;s character, and what you know about the esteem in which others hold this student<br \/>\n\u2022Be warm, concrete, frank, and truthful<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other considerations:<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is helpful if the recommender can say something specific about the appropriateness of the chosen U.K. academic programs, and why the applicant should study in the U.K.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshallscholarship.org\/\">http:\/\/www.marshallscholarship.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Information drawn from Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission and Joe Schall, &#8220;Writing Recommendation Letters&#8221;\u00a0 (Penn State University 1997)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guidelines for Writing Fellowship Recommendation Letters Recommendation letters are a key component\u00a0of a fellowship application.\u00a0Selection committees\u00a0rely on\u00a0recommenders&#8217; words as they evaluate and\u00a0rank candidates.
