A Conversation with Hartford Promise Scholar Tiana Starks ’21 and Walter Harrison ’68, H’18
Trinity College student Tiana Starks ’21 spoke recently with Hartford Promise about her experience making the transition from Hartford’s Global Communications Academy to the Trinity campus. “Every time I went on Trinity’s campus, I felt a sense of belonging,” she told Walter Harrison ’68, H’18, co-chair of the Hartford Promise Board of Directors and a Trinity trustee.
A Passion for Helping People in His Home Country
“My country is going through rough times,” said Daniel Santos Ramírez ’23, a Trinity College student from Caracas, Venezuela. “I came to Trinity and the U.S. to get skills and training to help make things better back home.” Santos Ramírez has co-founded a project called Yakera, an online platform empowering Venezuelans to create fundraising campaigns and access donations from around the world.
Mental Toughness and Team Support Drive Strong Athletic Career
Julia Burdulis ’21 found a strong sense of community at Trinity, especially as a member of the Bantam cross country and track and field teams. ‘I do not think I could have done what I’ve been able to accomplish without my teammates,’ Burdulis said.

Trinity Innovation Center Now Open in Downtown Hartford
Trinity College has opened the 13,000-square-foot Trinity Innovation Center in downtown Hartford as a space for boundary-crossing collaborations and creativity. Located on the third floor of One Constitution Plaza, the new center will house Trinity’s partnership with Infosys; the Digital Health CT accelerator; and new innovation and entrepreneurship programming for students.

Helping Students Persist through Challenges
Trinity’s Student Success team is adept at connecting students with resources to help navigate challenges they encounter during college. With the team’s leadership, Trinity has achieved a first-year student retention rate of 90 percent, worthy of celebration in any year and even more so in the time of COVID-19.

Fundraising Volunteers Mobilize to Rally Student Support
The college’s more than 300 fundraising volunteers serve as vital connectors between Trinity and its alumni and parent community. So far this fiscal year, Trinity has added 86 fundraising volunteers, including members of the Class of 2020.

First-year students enrolled in Trinity’s Community Action Gateway program are working with Hartford organizations on increasing voter engagement leading up to the 2020 election. The Community Action Gateway is designed for highly motivated first-year students interested in learning to create social change in their communities.
