This course provides a general introduction to the study of film and focuses on the key terms and concepts used to describe and analyze the film experience. As we put this set of tools and methods in place, we will also explore different modes of film production and some of the critical topics and debates that have shaped the discipline of film studies (genre, auteur criticism, realism, modernism, film aesthetics, and ideology).<\/p>\n

The weekly screenings online feature such certified run-don\u2019t-walk must-see all-time classics such as JAWS, VERTIGO, CITIZEN KANE and DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE.<\/p>\n

The required textbook for the course is: Bordwell and Thompson, Film Art: An Introduction<\/em>. Any edition from the 8th<\/sup> to the most recent – the 12th<\/sup> – will work, and I strongly recommend you buy a cheap used edition via an online source over the winter break. It will also be available at the Trinity Bookstore listed under the course number in the spring.
