Earth Stories: Writing Climate Change<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Thursday, April 21st 2022<\/h4>\n

Join us for a <\/span>panel discussion<\/span><\/strong> moderated by Amy Brady, during which dramatist Chantal Bilodeau, poet Mart\u00edn Espada, and novelist Pitchaya Sudbanthad will discuss the ways in which climate crisis has influenced not only what they write about, but how they write. The panel will take place during Common Hour (12:15- 1:25pm)<\/strong> in the Reese Room, Smith House<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later in the day, beginning at 4:30pm, each writer will lead a workshop<\/strong> for students on how to challenge and remake literary form(s) as you engage climate issues. Interested students can choose 1 of 3 workshops<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

1. <\/span>Amy Brady and Chantal Bilodeau<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

Workshop title: <\/span>The Other Story of Climate Change\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Description:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Part of our job as playwrights concerned about the climate crisis is to unearth the stories that are not being told on our stages, and to create visions of a future that we would actually want to live in. That means going beyond media headlines, transcending our own feelings of powerlessness and\/or despair and, against all odds, trusting in our capacity to create positive change. This workshop will give you some tools to steer your imagination away from dystopian worlds and towards a just and regenerative world.<\/p>\n

2. <\/span><\/span>Mart\u00edn<\/span> Espada<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

Workshop title: <\/span>T<\/strong>he Hurricane: A Poetry and Climate Change Workshop<\/strong><\/p>\n

4:30pm- 5:45pm, Raether Library and Information Technology Center – Joslin Family 1823 Room 206<\/strong><\/p>\n

Description:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We don\u2019t think of Hurricane Mar\u00eda as the kind of devastating climate change that kills thousands and drives migrants from their homes, though we should. We don\u2019t think of President Trump\u2019s bigoted response to the suffering of Puerto Rico as one more act of gross negligence in the face of climate change, though we should. The poet Mart\u00edn Espada will read and discuss his poem about Hurricane Mar\u00eda, called \u201cLetter to My Father,\u201d then use the poem as the model for a guided prompt. Participants will write poems on the spot, then share their work in the spirit of community and solidarity. Please come to the workshop prepared to write, speak and share.<\/p>\n

3. <\/span><\/span>Pitchaya Sudbanthad<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

Workshop title:<\/span><\/strong> The Narrative Shape of Things to Come<\/strong><\/p>\n

Description:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The scale of how human activity has affected and will change the planet\u2019s climate looms so large that it becomes unthinkable for many people. Narratives offer ways to depict an urgent truth via the imaginary. Through a discussion of short texts and craft, this workshop offers a quick survey of how elements of fiction writing can bring the often abstract, overwhelming magnitude of climate change down to a more personal and emotional level.<\/p>\n

Amy Brady<\/strong> is the Executive Director of\u00a0Orion Magazine<\/em>.\u00a0She is also the author of\u00a0Ice: An American Obsession<\/em>\u00a0(Putnam), co-editor of\u00a0The World As We Knew It: Dispatches from a Changing Climate<\/em>\u00a0(Catapult), and the former Deputy Publisher of\u00a0Guernica<\/em>.\u00a0Her writing on culture and climate change has appeared in\u00a0O, the Oprah magazine<\/em>,\u00a0The New Republic<\/em>,\u00a0The Village Voice<\/em>,\u00a0Slate<\/em>,\u00a0McSweeney’s<\/em>, and other places. She holds a PhD in literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and has won writing and research awards from the National Science Foundation, the Bread Loaf Environmental Writers Conference, and the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n

Chantal Bilodeau<\/strong> is a Montreal-born, New York-based playwright. In\u00a0her capacity as artistic director of the Arts & Climate Initiative (formerly The Arctic Cycle), she has been\u00a0instrumental in getting the theatre\u00a0and educational communities, as well as\u00a0audiences in the U.S. and abroad, to engage in climate action through\u00a0programming that includes live events, talks,\u00a0publications, workshops, national\u00a0and international convenings, and a worldwide distributed theatre festival. She\u00a0is writing a series of plays that look at the social and\u00a0environmental changes\u00a0taking place in the eight Arctic states and in 2019, she was named one of \u201c8\u00a0Trailblazers Who Are Changing the Climate Conversation\u201d by\u00a0Audubon Magazine.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Mart\u00edn Espada<\/strong> has published more than twenty books as a poet, editor, essayist and translator. His latest book of poems is called Floaters, <\/em>winner of the 2021 National Book Award. Other books of poems include\u00a0Vivas to Those Who Have Failed\u00a0<\/em>(2016),\u00a0The Trouble Ball\u00a0<\/em>(2011),\u00a0The Republic of Poetry\u00a0<\/em>(2006) and\u00a0Alabanza<\/em>\u00a0(2003). He is the editor of What Saves Us: Poems of Empathy and Outrage in the Age of Trump<\/em> (2019). He has received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, the Shelley Memorial Award, the Robert Creeley Award, an Academy of American Poets Fellowship, the PEN\/Revson Fellowship, a Letras Boricuas Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship.\u00a0The Republic of Poetry<\/em>\u00a0was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. The title poem of his collection Alabanza,<\/em> about 9\/11, has been widely anthologized and performed. His book of essays and poems,\u00a0Zapata\u2019s Disciple<\/em>\u00a0(1998), was banned in Tucson as part of the Mexican-American Studies Program outlawed by the state of Arizona. A former tenant lawyer in Greater Boston, Espada is a professor of English at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. http:\/\/www.martinespada.net\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Pitchaya Sudbanthad<\/strong> is the author of the novel\u00a0Bangkok Wakes to Rain<\/em><\/a>, first published by\u00a0Riverhead Books<\/a>\u00a0(US) and\u00a0Sceptre<\/a>\u00a0(UK), and selected as a notable book of the year by\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Washington Post<\/em>, as well as Finalist for the Center for Fiction\u2019s First Novel Prize.\u00a0He has received fellowships in fiction writing from the New York Foundation for the Arts and MacDowell, and currently splits time between Bangkok and Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
