The spring semester is approaching, and now is the time to sign up for this unique community learning experience.<\/h2>\n<h4>PBPL 310: Tax Policy and Inequality is a course in which you will:<\/h4>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Receive IRS training to achieve basic certification in tax preparation.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>Learn about tax policies (and the politics behind them)<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>Volunteer at the Trinity VITA tax clinic at Trinfo.cafe<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>For more information about the course, email Serena Laws at serena.laws@trincoll.edu.<\/h4>\n<p><strong>To apply for the course, fill out the brief information sheet linked <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/Um4dTbcxyxyyXMqR7\">here.<\/a> Applications will be reviewed starting 10\/30, and will continue to be accepted until the course fills<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><strong>In the Political Science course \u201cTax Policy and Inequality in Hartford\u201d<\/strong> (PBPL 310), students learn about the tax code and the history of tax credits in the classroom, and then are trained as IRS-certified tax preparers. The course reviews scholarship on the politics and policies that led to the growth of social programs in the tax code and includes hands-on learning about the intersection between tax policy and social policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><strong>For the Community Learning component<\/strong>, students are trained to do income tax preparation and volunteer for six hours per week to assist Hartford community members in the VITA tax clinic at Trinfo Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title\">\u201cThe students learn so much about how policy works on the ground and how difficult it is to make ends meet as a lower wage worker in Connecticut right now,\u201d says Trinfo VITA clinic site director Serena Laws, Senior Lecturer in Political Science and an IRS-trained Trinfo VITA clinic site supervisor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<!-- iframe plugin v.5.2 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lh8htev4LpM\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" 0=\"allowfullscreen&gt;&lt;\/iframe\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"comp-l1tx33ps\" class=\"_2Hij5 _3bcaz\" data-testid=\"richTextElement\" data-angle=\"0\" data-angle-style-location=\"style\" data-screen-in-hide=\"done\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content clearfix\">\n<p><strong>Past Student Experiences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I learned the sheer complexity of the tax system, but also the struggles that low-income families face that I wasn\u2019t aware of. So just understanding that they might have four different jobs and they\u2019re making nothing, essentially. And then you throw in a kid and rent\u2026 I just didn\u2019t understand before.&#8221; <strong>\u2013 Tommy Peduto \u201921<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_4\">&#8220;This course gave me a better understanding of the tax code, specifically how taxes are filed, what all the forms are, how refunds work\u2026 Before this I wasn\u2019t exposed to the process and I feel like it\u2019s going to be helpful in the future for all of us.&#8221; <strong>\u2013 Mary Meza Celis \u201922 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was by far the most interesting and rewarding class that I have taken at Trinity. I went into the class with basic knowledge of the tax system. But, after taking the class I have a deeper understanding of the rampant inequality many families face at tax time. I truly felt the impact of my work in the clinic. Everyday felt rewarding when I was able to get the tax credits or reduce their tax bill by helping them understand programs they otherwise would never know about.&#8221;<strong> &#8211; Antonio Guirola &#8217;22<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyday I worked in the tax clinic was rewarding, engaging, and informative. This was the first time I truly felt engaged with the community around our campus.
