In An n Ale,<\/i> Jean Appolon Expressions<\/a> offers a collection of three works that embody the healing and unifying capacities of Haitian culture. Integrating contemporary and folkloric dance and music traditions, Appolon\u2019s body of work draws on his own cultural, familial, spiritual, and socio-political experience of Haiti. Through Ginen\u00a0<\/i>(an excerpt of the evening-length Traka)<\/i>, Black Is Black<\/i> with Val Jeanty (Musical Director), and Petro <\/i>(a work in progress), Appolon and his collaborators explore personal and historical traumas, healing, and resilience.<\/p>\n

nefesh<\/em> is a performance project emerging from my exploration of Ashkenazi singing, rabbinic prayer, embodied spiritual practice, and diasporic politics. The project sutures across generations and genres, weaving together contemporary dance, traditional music, feminism, and neo-Hasidism. This work reaches back to my orthodox, Yiddish-speaking grandfather and great-grandparents, reclaiming cultures almost destroyed by anti-semitism and Zionism.<\/p>\n

Hadar Ahuvia is a cross-disciplinary artist, ritual leader, and educator. She creates performances, workshops, and rituals that forefront the role of the body in political, social and spiritual action. Ahuvia was named a Dance Magazine \u201c25 to Watch in 2019\u201d, and her work Everything you have is yours?<\/em> earned her a 2018 Bessie nomination for Outstanding “Breakout” Choreographer<\/em>, and inspired the documentary film of the same name by Tatyana Tenenbaum,<\/a> which had its US premiere at DOC NYC in November 2024.<\/p>\n

In Spring Performance Mix<\/i>, the Department of Theater and Dance takes a new riff on its annual showcase of student choreography by mixing in original spoken word pieces by students, as well. The program of five solo pieces was selected by a panel of students, faculty, and staff and highlights a wide array of approaches to creating live performance from experiments with dance as a visual art, dance inspired by a piece of music, the art of monologue, improvised interactive design, and classical Odissi dance, an ancient dance form from India. Participating student artists include Jade Mellitz (\u201926), Vicente Gil (\u201927), Radhika Ramdas (\u201928), Orfeas Spyraki (\u201928), and Sydney Young (\u201926) with stage management by Kathleen Kelly (\u201926). Gathered around a campfire, they piece together the plot of a \u201cSimpsons\u201d episode from memory. It\u2019s the first moment of a people establishing a culture through storytelling, and we sing, laugh, and struggle along with the characters as this mainstay of classic pop television, mashed up with songs, contemporary memes, and TikToks, becomes the foundation of a new mythology and artistic tradition.<\/p>\n

Now over 25 years old, the Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival is proud to be one of the top competitions for young organists in North America. The festival’s mission is to support and encourage young organists in the earliest stages of their education and careers, and to increase appreciation of organ music in the general public. At the heart of the Festival is an annual, national competition for young organists hosted at Trinity College, Hartford. Alternating biennially between a High School and Young Professional Division (up to age 26), competitors earn significant cash prizes to support their education and career endeavors.<\/p>\n

Finalists of the 2024 Biennial Young Professional Competition. The competition will be held live at Trinity College Chapel in Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday, September 21, 2024 beginning at 10:00 a.m. Each finalist will present a 45-minute recital including a J.S. Bach Trio Sonata and one of C\u00e9sar Franck\u2019s Three Chorals. In addition to other repertoire of the competitor\u2019s choosing, the performance includes at least one work by a woman or BIPOC composer. Each 45-minute recital will also be live-streamed from the ASOFH YouTube Channel.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Austin Arts Center<\/strong> presents a six-performance encore engagement of HartBeat Ensemble<\/strong>‘s acclaimed production of Jimmy & Lorraine: A Musing<\/em><\/strong>. Talvin Wilk’s poetic and political play focuses on the friendship between two groundbreaking Black American writers and activists, Lorraine Hansberry and James Baldwin. The production kicks off HartBeat Ensemble’s James Baldwin Centennial Season.<\/p>\n

Jimmy and Lorraine: A Musing<\/em> is a meditation on the American political climate of the late 50s and early 60s through the lens of two significant artists of the time, James Baldwin and Lorraine Hansberry. Following their impactful careers as artists, their call to social activism, and the challenges of wrestling with the balance of an artistic career and politics, their lives give us an opportunity to look at this rich period of political and social upheaval. Inspired by text from biographies, journals, personal correspondences, plays, novels, interviews, essays, and media clips, a picture of this significant period in American history is revealed with Baldwin and Hansberry front and center. Significant speeches, television interviews, and political debates all serve as fodder for this meditation. Hansberry and Baldwin were at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. Still, both had arrived, through their art, efforts to depict and grapple with the complex lives of African Americans in American society. Together, the lives of these two artists and social activists give a profound perspective on the artist’s quandary in political struggle and the challenges of a radical life.<\/p>\n

Sighted<\/em> Eyes\/Feeling Heart<\/i>\u00a0is the first-ever feature documentary about Lorraine Hansberry, the visionary playwright who authored the groundbreaking A Raisin in the Sun<\/i>. An overnight sensation, the play transformed the American theater and has long been considered a classic, yet the remarkable story of the playwright faded from view. With this documentary, filmmaker Tracy Heather Strain resurrects the Lorraine Hansberry we have forgotten\u2014a passionate artist, committed activist, and sought-after public intellectual who waged an outspoken and defiant battle against injustice in 20th-century America. The film reveals Hansberry\u2019s prescient works tackling race, human rights, women\u2019s equality and sexuality that anticipated social and political movements on the horizon. Lorraine Hansberry lived much of her 34 years guided by a deep sense of responsibility to others, proclaiming: “One cannot live with sighted eyes and feeling heart and not know or react to the miseries which afflict this world.”<\/p>\n

In Bodies Becoming: Three Evenings of Choreographic Research<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em> a company of student dancers stretch their minds and bodies, engaging in three distinct models of choreographic inquiry over the course of the semester. Each evening combines embodied experimentation with discussion, highlighting the ongoing choreographic research of artists Rebecca Pappas (September 26), Sara Smith (October 24), and Brandon Couloute (December 5).<\/p>\n

Sara Smith (10\/24) will present an excerpt of Inside the Breath (In Network Time)<\/em>,<\/em> an imagined utopia rooted in ecological and social questions, and the theories of Gloria Anzald\u00faa as modeled by octopuses. The series ends with Bradon Couloutte\u2019s Marcus Rodriguez Live @ Trinity (12\/5), a live hip hop concert experience featuring singer Marcus Rodriguez and professional and student dancers in an unforgettable, high-energy evening.<\/p>\n

An evening of original multidisciplinary theater and dance performances created by the students of the Trinity\/La MaMa study away class of Fall 2024. This performance is the culmination of TLM, an intensive performing arts program, where throughout the semester the cohort immerse themselves in the diverse art scenes and everyday life of New York City. They explore a wide range of approaches to creating performance: from puppetry to butoh, clowning to vogueing, improvisation to writing solo performance. This show is the culmination of their artistic experiences, experimentations, and on-going discoveries.<\/p>\n
