{"id":2778,"date":"2020-09-10T18:00:05","date_gmt":"2020-09-10T18:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/alumniandfamilies\/?page_id=2778"},"modified":"2020-09-10T18:33:41","modified_gmt":"2020-09-10T18:33:41","slug":"gabriellaburnham09","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/alumniandfamilies\/virtuallongwalk\/bantamcheckins\/gabriellaburnham09\/","title":{"rendered":"Bantam Check-In with Gabriella Burnham &#8217;09"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fter <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a ten-year ca<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reer working<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in immigration law, Gabriella <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Burnham <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">decided <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">earlier this year <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to leave <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">her job at<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n international <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">law firm to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pursue <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a career as a novelist<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he did<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> know<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, however,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that New York City would go into<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a COVID-19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> lockdown a few weeks later<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd yet, she <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">felt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> pre<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pared for this moment. Burnham graduated from Trinity College<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with an English Literature degree<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in 2009, at the height of the economic recession. To keep <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">my interests alive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> outside of the corporate <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">world<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">I never wrote thinking I needed to get published and have it <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> my big break<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> she said.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That changed in the summer of 2018, when she finished the book<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">embarked on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> long<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> road trip<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">up the Pacific Coast <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ighway. It was only when she returned that she decided to try to find a literary agent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although she began the process with no expectations,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> her manuscript was <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bought<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> One World, an imprint<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">of<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Penguin Random<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">se<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and was published this summer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The novel, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">set<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Brazil, is about a woman named Linda who moves to S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00e3<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o Pa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ul<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o because her husband is offered a prestigious teaching residency. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Linda <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is dealing with a feeling that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">her <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">own <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">life has been <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">consumed <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by her husband<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> ambitions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014and a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lthough s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> considering separati<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ng <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">im<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, she decides to accompany him<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to Brazil<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. At the same time, she recognizes the shared experience that the past several months <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> offered. \u201cThe pandemic has a push and pull of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">need<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to isolate from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">wanting <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">collective space <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to fight for racial justice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. That\u2019s where I found solidarity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">going on the streets and protesting for a better life for all people.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She has also been pleased to see how <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">books <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have provided a means of solace for people during these <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">uncertain <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">times<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cPeople are reading now <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as a way to<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">learn about<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> anti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">raci<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sm, to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">find ways to enrichen their time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, or <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">maybe even because<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> they ran out of things to watch on Netflix,\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">she said.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ooks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> endure as comfort through periods of change and growth. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Books are also a tool of connection for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Burnham. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ading <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had allowed her<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">to reconnect with some of her Trinity friends. When she did a Zoom launch event for her book, she saw Trinity names popping up in attendees. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not long after, sh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e received an email from some friends looking to restart a feminist book club from their time at Trinity. Burnham and the club have now reconnected, and have relabeled their group an intersectional reading group. They\u2019re starting with a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n essay<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by Audre Lord<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e, and have come together with a renewed enthusiasm after more than a decade.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The power of literature has had a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n indelible <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">effect <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n Burnham\u2019s life. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For students and recent alumni who have just entered the workforce, Burnham urges them to take pride in the liberal arts. \u201cIf you think back to 2009 when I graduated from Trinity, we were in the peak of the recession,\u201d she said. Although there is a push to emphasize career-oriented studies, she wants students and new graduates to remember the value of the liberal arts. &#8220;When I worked as a hostess I was still writing, when I worked at the mall, I was still writing. It\u2019s something you can take with you no matter what <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">job you have.
