Since the outset of the pandemic, Allyn Magrino\u2019s public relations firm, which has more than 50 employees and serves <\/span>a number of<\/span> travel and luxury brands, has gone remote. Magrino isn\u2019t letting that slow her down. \u201cI\u2019m by nature pretty optimistic\u2014and I believe that the caterpillar becomes a butterfly. We\u2019re wrapped in this tough <\/span>cocoon<\/span> but we will get through it.<\/span> I won\u2019t make light of the awful things that are happening\u2014but we see silver linings where we can,\u201d she said. One recent example is Magrino\u2019s approach to her own business. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at our agency as a client. There are opportunities, it\u2019s a forced step back and to look at what we\u2019ve been doing and to do a reality check and see what\u2019s working.\u201d\u00a0 The perspective that her team has gained during their time working remotely has allowed them to reflect on how to make a successful business even better.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Magrino, getting through the difficult time brought on by the pandemic is all about diving in, and using the versatility and creativity she has cultivated in her career to make the most of a challenging situation. Most importantly, she aims to set an example of resilience for her two children.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As she considers the trials of Trinity\u2019s most recent graduates, she knows that resilience will be a trait they will also have to master. \u201cI have been thinking about the graduating class with sympathy and empathy. But swimming through this kind of stuff is a good, quick reality check about what direction to go in,\u201d she said. Moreover, she notes that it isn\u2019t always about landing a dream job right after graduating. <\/span>Magrino can speak from experience. As a young graduate, she did not have a clear picture of what she wanted to do for her career. At the encouragement of one of her Trinity professors, she bought a one-way ticket to Paris. Once there, <\/span>she took a position working for a law firm, as she was considering going to law school. <\/span>When her <\/span>six-month visa was up<\/span>, she returned to the United States and\u00a0<\/span>she was able to land positions working for a few high-profile employers, including<\/span>\u00a0positions in Donald Trump\u2019s <\/span>office of\u00a0<\/span>general counsel<\/span>\u00a0a<\/span>nd <\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>Robert Maxwell<\/span> and MacMillan publishing. O<\/span>n<\/span>ce she realized she wasn\u2019t interested in a career in law <\/span>and wanted to use her French,\u00a0<\/span>she took<\/span>\u00a0a r<\/span>ole coordinating public relations for the French West Indies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Her liberal arts degree and French language experience gave her the versatility to <\/span>adapt<\/span>\u00a0as she navigated the professional world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

F<\/span>ollowing her passion <\/span>and moving <\/span>overseas w<\/span>as a risk that brought Magrino clarity, and<\/span> eventually brought her to start <\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>business with her sister<\/span>. <\/span>\u201cA lot of people are afraid to take that first job, but when you\u2019re first out of college is the only time you can check things out,\u201d she said. <\/span>It\u00a0<\/span>was th<\/span>at\u00a0<\/span>first adventure abroad that helped shape her story, and since then\u00a0<\/span>she has continued to innovate and adapt.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Magrino\u2019s <\/span>story is an example of how, for a graduate of Trinity, opportunity can come from unexpected places. <\/span>Magrino urges recent graduates not to discount the power of the skills they already have during their job search. Writing, fluency in digital media, or knowledge of a foreign language can all be tremendously useful. <\/span>One example <\/span>she <\/span>offers<\/span> i<\/span>s <\/span>the <\/span>nuanced understanding of social media that <\/span>many young graduates already have. This innate understanding <\/span>can be critical for businesses that don\u2019t have the same facility with these platforms<\/span>. “<\/span>Offer your skills pro bono to a small business, or volunteer somewhere. There are nonprofits that need your help.\u201d These small projects can develop into powerful networking opportunities and vital resume builders. The most important word one needs to know during this critical period of discovery, Magrino said, is \u201chustle.\u201d<\/span> \u201cPut your head down and focus,\u201d she said, and w<\/span>ith <\/span>the <\/span>drive, and guts to buy that one-way ticket to follow your passion, individuals can achieve tremendous success.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
