Montolieu, France Summer

Perched on a rocky spur at the heart of the Cabardès wine-growing area, the village of Montolieu is unique in Europe. Not only do 15 bookshops thrive along its winding streets, but it also hosts artists and craftspeople of all kinds, providing us with a remarkable opportunity to learn the art of the book.

Creative Writing and the Art of the Book

This half-credit course comprises two weeks of writing workshops and workshops in book arts--calligraphy, illumination, typography, cartooning, bookbinding. Through structured and free-form assignments, students will write and revise to arrive at a text they can shape into a material work of literary art. We will take advantage of the "book village" of Montolieu in the Languedoc province of France for inspiration and studio work. Excursions to Carcassonne, Narbonne, local historic sites and art centers.
