Transportation from and to Piarco International Airport (airport code POS) for registered participants in the Turning Tides Conference can be arranged with The University of the West Indies staff. Information on this matter and other details on local issues at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, should be communicated to the following conference email address:


Communication to this email address will be monitored by Mr. Ronald Francis of The University of the West Indies. Mr. Francis will be running/managing the conference secretariat.

The currency in Trinidad & Tobago is TT dollars. The dollars referenced below are in U.S. dollars. Rates of TT dollars to U.S. dollars are available via various links on the internet through various browsers.

Information on Recommended Airlines

You may make your reservation on any airline that travels to Port-of-Spain, through any route that gives you the best options. Best prices may be obtained on Caribbean Airlines, which flies direct from NYC to POS, as well as from other locations. Other airlines that travel to Port-of-Spain include (but are not limited to) United Airlines, JetBlue, and American Airlines.

Please count on a taxi fee of approximately $30 US for transport from the airport to your hotel.

Housing information

Hotel and Guest Houses that we recommend include the following:

A. Region of The University of the West Indies; all these facilities advertise free WiFi:

  1. The University Inn, on the UWI campus, and so walking distance from the Conference activities.  Tel:  1-868-662.9635. www.theuniversityinn.com

    The University Inn is providing us with a special Conference Rate of US$120 per night, taxes and breakfast included, for single occupancy.  We are holding 9 rooms at this rate, and another 9 are available.

    In addition to the Inn itself, The University Inn has an affiliated guesthouse called The University Lodge, where you can book individually or in groups.  The facilities of the lodge include private bedroom, shared bathroom, dining room, and kitchen. Each lodge has 2 bedrooms on the lower floor, with one bathroom, and 4 bedrooms with one bath on the upper floor. Rates:

    Lower floor US$63, inclusive of taxes and breakfast

    Upper Floor US$73, inclusive of taxes and breakfast.

    Rates online range from $80 per night to $140 per night. Book directly through the Lodge. This Lodge is in St. Augustine, the location of the University but is located close to the rainforest of the Northern Range.

    Located in Valsayn, 2 kilometres from the University. Has a pool.
    Rates:  single US$88; double US$110; triple US$132; quad US$154.
    Book directly.

B.    Port-of-Spain (approximately a half hour from the University but the recommended hotels are in the capital city).  Book these directly.

    Luxury hotel in Port-of-Spain, close to the highway and the waterfront, with spectacular views of the Port. Infinity Swimming Pool, fitness center. Rates for our dates begin at US$169 per day.

    Trinidad’s first luxury hotel, the famous “upside down” hotel, built to fit into the ecology of the hillside. Recently renovated. In Port-of-Spain on Lady Young Road.  Luxury swimming pool area. Rates for our dates begin at US$119 per day for king bed with balcony.
  3. Recommended Port of Spain Guest House. L’Orchidée Boutique Hotel 1-868-621-0618
    Highly recommended boutique hotel in St. Ann’s, close to Port-of-Spain.30 minutes from the University but adjacent to the Capital City. No swimming pool. Owned by a friend of Trinity parents.  Known for lovely staff. Fantastic breakfast! Good location near the Savannah. Prices start at US$440 for a four day stay (approx. US$110 per night), taxes and breakfast included.

Port-of-Spain has many other hotels, a number of which are excellent. If you want to extend your trip, come early, or just stay in POS rather than close to the University, you may choose one of the above or surf the web for other options.
