Trinity and HMTCA Honor School’s First-Ever Graduating Class

Dean of the Faculty Addressed Graduates at Trinity Partner Institution

Hartford, CT, June 23, 2015 – Just weeks after Trinity’s Class of 2015 received their degrees and Joanne Berger-Sweeney celebrated her first Commencement as president, Trinity’s neighbor and partner Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy (HMTCA) marked another first: its first graduating class since its formation in 2011.

Formerly Hartford Magnet Middle School, HMTCA was born of a partnership between Trinity College and the Hartford Public Schools. Among those instrumental in HMTCA coming to fruition were Thomas Mitzel, dean of the faculty and vice-president of academic affairs; Stefanie Chambers, associate professor of political science; and Bill Reynolds ’71, who served Trinity as secretary of the College when the partnership was forged. Each was there, along with HMTCA Principal Sally Biggs, for this first class’s graduation.

As a result of the partnership between Trinity College and the Hartford Public Schools, more than two dozen members of HMTCA’s Class of 2015 have taken Trinity College courses and graduated with dual transcripts. In addition, all high school senior English classes were held at Trinity, affording the entire class exposure to Trinity’s campus.

During their graduation ceremony, the HMTCA Class of 2015 processed down the Long Walk to the Quad while serenaded by bagpipes. The procession was led by two dozen students who have earned honors distinction, including members of the National Honor Society. Mitzel welcomed the 74 HMTCA graduates and their families to Trinity’s campus.

“Your education is a wonderful accomplishment, and it is also a responsibility,” said Mitzel. “It is my hope that you will use your talents and hard work to help lift those around you.”

Twenty-seven colleges around the country will welcome HMTCA’s graduates in the fall, including three who are members of Trinity’s Class of 2019: Dario Gaci of Hartford, Jordan Gershman of Wethersfield, and Alex Tomcho of Windsor.
