About the Office

Tim Cresswell was appointed Dean of the Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs on July 1, 2016. Reporting to the President, he is the chief academic officer and the second ranking officer of the College.

The dean of the faculty and vice president for academic affairs shares responsibility for academic administration with three deans of academic affairs. The four deans work together as a coordinated team and are members of the President’s Cabinet.  Two of the Deans of Academic Affairs are responsible for half of the departments and programs, across all four divisions.  The Dean of Academic Affairs and Strategic Initiatives oversees several other academic programs, including Graduate Studies, and leads efforts to build new strategic partnerships and offerings

Responsibilities: Within Academic Affairs, oversees graduate studies, as well as summer and January terms.

Anne Lambright
Dean of Academic Affairs and Professor of Language and Culture Studies

Oversees the Allan K. Smith Center for Writing and Rhetoric, Art History, Chemistry, Classics, Economics, Educational Studies, English, Environmental Science, Film Studies, History, Mathematics, Music, Neuroscience, Political Science, Religion, Sociology, Urban Studies, and gateway programs, as well as the following groups and committees:  Curriculum Committee, Faculty Diversity Working Group, Emergency Management Team.  Oversees all issues related to academic advising.

Melanie Stein
Dean of Academic Affairs and Professor of Mathematics

Responsibilities:  Oversees the Aetna Quantitative Center, the American Studies, Anthropology, Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, Human Rights, International Studies, Jewish Studies, Language and Culture Studies, Philosophy, Physics, Psychology, Public Policy and Law, Studio Arts, Theater and Dance, and Women, Gender and Sexuality  Departments and Programs, Urban Educational Initiatives, and the First-year seminars, as well as the following committees: ​Assessment Advisory Board,  Faculty Diversity Working Group, Faculty Research Committee,  Institutional Review Board, Learning Spaces Committee, ITEC, IACUC.  Serves as a liaison to the Organization of Retired Faculty.

Five staff members, functioning as a team, provide a range of administrative support services to the Dean's Office, the faculty, various committees, and others engaged in academic administration.

Sylvia W. DeMore
Special Assistant to the Dean of Faculty, assists the dean with all matters pertaining to the Appointments & Promotions and Educational Policy Committees, contract renewals, appointment letters, leave requests, faculty profiles, and faculty searches.  She also assists the Ann Plato Search Committee.

Dania M. Field
Associate Director of Intersession Programs and Special Assistant for Strategic Initiatives, plays a key role in leading the summer and J-term intersessions for Academic Affairs.

Martine Kunzika
Assistant to the Deans of Faculty and Academic Affairs, manages the Deans' calendars and the daily flow of activity within the Dean of Faculty's Office.

Patricia Moody
Director of Academic Finance, manages the various budgets for which the Dean's Office has responsibility.  She also tracks expenses, performs budget analysis, and processes all faculty reimbursement requests.

Leo Schuchert
Coordinator, First Year Academic Experiences & Special Assistant to the Deans of Academic Affairs, manages logistical aspects of the first-year seminars and gateways, including the mentors program; coordinates the academic components of the Starting Out system for incoming students; provides administrative support to the Deans of Academic Affairs on a variety of projects, including Curriculum Committee, Faculty Research Committee, Summer Research Program, academic advising, J-Start and Global Start.
