PARTICIPATION

Active participation in this course will allow us to meet our course objectives, to engage each other in our topics of study, to share diverse perspectives on controversial topics, and to practice effective communication of intellectual thought. Therefore, daily attendance, adequate preparation (a minimum of 2-3 hours for EACH CLASS HOUR), and active participation through speaking and listening are all essential to be successful in the course.

The daily participation grade will be determined by the following 0-5 scale. In addition, since this course meets only once per week, NO MORE THAN ONE ABSENCE IS ALLOWED. Each additional absence will result in the lowering of the final grade by one step (eg. A to A- or A- to B+). Three late arrivals (five minutes after the beginning of class) will count as one unexcused absence.

Please note also that a positive and respectful attitude toward all class members, invited speakers, and their viewpoints is important in the evaluation of the participation grade.

        0 =    0% = absent
        1 =  20% = attending but not participating
        2 =  40% = passive participation showing a lack of preparation
        3 =  60% = passive participation
        4 =  80% = active participation
        5 = 100% = active participation with exceptional preparation
