DESCRIPCIÓN DEL CURSO

This course follows HISP 221 (Grammar & Composition) and/or HISP 224 (Spanish for Heritage/Bilingual Speakers), and its main objective is to offer students the opportunity to develop greater conversational skills in Spanish through a cultural study of film from Spain and Latin America.

During the semester we will have an introduction to the study of Iberian and Latin American cinema. We will view 1-2 films per week outside of class, and we will use our class time to discuss the social, historical, and cultural questions from each film.

Students will be required to study vocabulary each week and view the films BEFORE class in order to prepare for a discussion and interpretation in SPANISH of issues each film presents. There will also be a series of short essays for students to prepare arguments to debate regarding each film, as well as a formal oral presentation at mid-term.

The mid-term and final exams will include both oral and written components to integrate our film study and supplementary materials from the course.
