Syn-tectonic extension and lateral extrusion in Taiwan: the tectonic response to a basement high promontory

Preface and Abstract
Chapter 1 - Fault geometries illuminated from seismicity in central Taiwan: implications for crustal scale structural boundaries in the Central Range
Chapter 2 - Constraints on syn-tectonic extension in southern Taiwan from global positioning system (GPS) data
Chapter 3 - Defining boundaries of a laterally extruding crustal block in the southern fold-and-thrust belt, Taiwan

Steven Sobolewski (2010) traveled with me to Taiwan in January of 2008 where we investigated the Chishan thrust fault in southwestern Taiwan. We were looking for sense of shear indicators along the fault to deterime an oblique component to the fault. However, we were surpised to find shear bands that clearly show a normal sense of motion which questions the relationship of the shear bands to the Chisahn fault. Stephen produced a poster for the 2008 American Geophysical Union (AGU) in San Francisco. We will both return to Taiwan over spring break 2009 to collect samples of the shear bands and surround rock for chemical analysis.
